Playing the defending Frontier League champion De Soto Wildcats on Tuesday evening, the regional runner-up Spring Hill Bronco soccer team set up several early scoring chances.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, the Wildcats kept the ball out of the back of the net. De Soto scored a goal in each half and went on to hand Spring Hill its first loss of the season, 2-1.

“The Wildcats made us pay for their missed chances when they would score the first goal of the match about halfway through the first half,” Spring Hill coach Michael Cox said. “The rest of the half would prove to be a stalemate on the scoreboard, but was very hard fought.”

De Soto made it a two goal advantage in the second half, scoring 10 minutes in for a 2-0 lead.

One would be hard pressed to nail down what Jordan Miller’s greatest asset was for the Spring Hill High School Broncos baseball program. alt

He hit close to .500 three straight years, ran down fly balls in center field and threw out many base runners who dared challenge his arm and was dominant on the mound.
In the end, it was probably none of those at all, but rather the fire inside of him that led him to be such a versatile star.

“Jordan was one of our team leaders,” Spring Hill coach David Londene said. “He leads mostly by example. He is a huge competitor.

“Jordan meant a lot to our team,” Londene said. “He is a four year starter for us and he has gotten better and better each year.”

Miller, the Tri-County Spotlight offensive player of the year, made his presence felt in the game, in the field and at the plate.

He hit a club-leading .494 with 38 hits in 77 at bats. Miller led the team in base hits (38), runs scored (26) and doubles (9). He tied for the lead in triples (3) and was second in runs batted in (20).

With the game on the line, Miller was the player you wanted to have up at the plate, Londene said.

“I can’t tell you how many clutch hits he has hit for us to either drive in a run or to just get a rally going,” Londene said. “There honestly wasn’t any pitcher he couldn’t hit against.”

The Tri-County Spotlight baseball team has a strong Spring Hill influence with eight Broncos earning a total of nine selections, including four of 10 first-team honors. alt

Jordan Miller, the offensive player of the year, heads this list for Spring Hill with first-team honors at outfield and a second-team selection at pitcher.

Evan Smith, catcher; Dylan Shafer, second base; and Brady Donahue, shortstop; join Miller with first-team selections for the Broncos.

Spring Hill went 19-7 on the season, winning two games at state to leave Salina with a Class 4A state runner-up trophy.

The Tri-County Spotlight first-team sports a lineup with 10 players who all hit .400 or better. Six of the 10 batted at least .450 and two players Skye Mills of Central Heights (.500) and Louisburg’s Canon Teague (.516) hit over .500.

Mills and Teague were first-team selections at outfield.

Other first-team selections were Kade Larson, Louisburg, first base; Dakota Danner, Prairie View, third base; Chance Sinclair, Osawatomie, pitcher; and Kody Cook, Louisburg, utility, designated hitter.

SALINA — Eight was enough to take the Spring Hill High School baseball team all the way to the Class 4A state tournament.

The Broncos, who defeated Paola, Iola and Osawatomie in games decided by a total of five runs, have won eight in a row.

Spring Hill is about as hot as anyone entering the tournament, winning not only eight straight, but 15 of its last 17 games.

It is the Broncos first trip to state since 1998, when Spring Hill placed third in the state.

Coach David Londene reached the 200-win milestone this season and leads the Broncos to state for the fifth time. Spring Hill won regional titles with Londene in 1993, 1995, 1896 and 1998. He is after his second state title. The Broncos win it all in 1993 and runner-up in 1995 and 1998.

Spring Hill also has won titles in three consecutive decades with just one more shot at keeping the streak alive in 2010. The Broncos won the 2-1A title in 1972, the 4-3-2-1A state crown in 1987 and the 4A title in 1993.

The Class 4A state bracket this year is loaded with state championship programs. Spring Hill (17-6) will face Scott City (13-10) in first round action 4 p.m. today at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina. The Broncos have faced Scott City twice in state tournament play, winning both meetings.
