One concern for the Spring Hill girls’ basketball team coming into Monday’s Class 4A substate tournament quarterfinal was attempting to shut down Osawatomie on the boards, particularly six-foot freshman Tayler Soucie.

That concern became a reality for Spring Hill in the game’s first five minutes.

Soucie was active in not only getting to the rim, but also saving a couple of possessions for Osawatomie by her hard work on the offensive glass. Such was also the case for sophomore Rebecca Fisher, who saved a near turnover for the Trojans and passed the ball to Kandice Firley for a basket. Osawatomie was just attacking the lane hard.

Having watched enough of Osawatomie’s activity on the boards, which allowed the Trojans to gain an early one-point lead, Spring Hill coach Clay Frigon called a time-out and brought up that subject to his squad.

“We were giving up way too many rebounds,” he said. “That was just something we wanted to make sure we focused in on. The girls responded.”
Did the Broncos ever.

Behind a concerted effort to not only shut down Osawatomie’s post players, but also pester the Trojan ball handlers with heavy pressure, Spring Hill proceeded to take control and went on to record a 52-22 home victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — St. Teresa’s, one of the perennial girls’ basketball powers in Missouri, slowed the Spring Hill Broncos down just enough in the first half to hang on for an 11-point win Tuesday.

St. Teresa’s won the game 59-47, despite being outscored five points in the second half.

Spring Hill dug too deep of a hole in the first half to climb out of against St. Teresa’s.

The Broncos were outscored by seven points in the first quarter, 15-8. St. Teresa’s went on an 18-8 run in the second quarter, making it a 17 point lead at the intermission.

Jumping out to a 23-5 lead in the first quarter, the Spring Hill girls’ basketball team left little drama in its 11th victory of the season Tuesday evening.

The Broncos’ offense hit the court running, and the defense did the rest, holding Belton, Mo., to seven points or less in each of the four quarters of basketball on its way to a 61-23 victory.

“It was a good win for us and should help us regain some confidence heading into the final stretch,” said Spring Hill coach Clay Frigon. “Our defense set the tone early on and that is what we have to continue to do in the rest of our games.”

Spring Hill also got to work its bench into the game, getting points from eight players in moving its record to 11-4.

The Broncos continued to roll with a 19-7 run in the second quarter.

LENEXA — Rebounds, free throws and turnovers provided St. James with all the advantage they needed in a 73-61 victory against Spring Hill on Tuesday evening.
Spring Hill was outrebounded 31 to 17.

St. James made more free throws than Spring Hill attempted, sinking 22 of 27 for 82 percent shooting. The Broncos made eight of 12 from the line.
Spring Hill also turned the ball over 16 times.

The combination of the three proved to be too much for Spring Hill to come back from in the 12-point loss.

St. James held a 17-12 advantage in the first quarter and went on a 22-13 run in the second quarter to make it a 14-point game at the half.

The Broncos pulled to within nine in the third quarter with a 16-11 run.
