It was a tale of two games at the plate Tuesday for the Prairie View baseball team.

Pounding out 11 hits in the opener, the Buffalos built a big lead before surviving a late scare from Anderson County to hang on for a 12-10 home victory. The bats, however, went cold for Prairie View in the nightcap as it manufactured just four hits, falling to Anderson County, 10-0.

Prairie View didn’t waste any time getting the bats going in game one, scoring two quick runs in the first inning. Anderson County responded with two runs of its own in the top of the second to tie the game, but Prairie View scored seven times in its half of the second, before adding two more runs in the fourth to build an 11-2 lead.

Jordan Kees, Dustin Ohlmeier and Eric Noel each had two hits, driving in a combined seven runs. Keaton Hines, Dakota Danner, Matt Ferguson, Jake Bradley and Brandon Milliron also had hits for the Buffalos.

Bradley picked up the victory, allowing four runs and four hits. Ferguson came on for the save.

The points came from just about every event for the Jayhawk-Linn girls’ and Central Heights boys’ track and field teams Tuesday at the Pleasanton Invitational. It wasn’t just the first-place finishers who helped to rack up the points for both squads, but also from those Jayhawks and Vikings who placed second through sixth in their respective events.

Jayhawk-Linn ran away with the girls’ title, winning with 133 points. Central Heights was a distant second with 75 points, Pleasanton third with 59. Central Heights won the boys’ title with 134 points. Pleasanton was the runner-up with 102 points, Jayhawk-Linn fifth with 13.

Jayhawk-Linn’s Morgan Eastwood burned the competition to capture gold in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.46 seconds, nearly three second faster than her nearest competitor, and also earned a silver medal for placing second in the 300 hurdles in 49.54. Shelby Krull cleared the bar at 7 feet to win the pole vault and also earned a gold medal in the 400-meter dash (1:08.71).

Marissa Cox delivered three gold medals for Central Heights, winning the shot put (38 feet, 8 inches), discus (124-2) and high jump (5-2). She and Jayhawk-Linn’s Meriel Long both cleared the bar at 5-2 in the high jump, but Cox won based on the number of jumps. Alicia Croci (108-7) edged runner-up Amanda Strickler of Christ Prep (108-0) to win the javelin.

Pleasanton’s Lindsey Conn won a gold medal on her home track for winning the 100 dash (13.58) and was second in the 200 dash (28.10).

Prairie View’s Alisha Brown earned bronze medals for her performances in the 200 dash (28.45) and 300 hurdles (49.95), while Maci Roy was third in the 1,600 run (6:25.11).

On the boys’ side, Central Heights’ Russell Hampton won the shot put (46-6) and discus (137-7). Terence Venniro leaped 39-4.5 to win the triple jump. Jake Wolfe recorded a throw of 157-6.5 to win the javelin. Ethan Van Zant crossed the finish line in 11:04.02 to earn a gold medal in the 3,200 run. JD Johnson was second in the 200 dash in 24.51.

Last year the Prairie View baseball team won the Pioneer League regular-season title and advanced to the Class 4A regional title game a year ago, so this year’s Buffalos have some shoes to fill. Even with the Prairie View baseball team having lost seven starters and a handful of reserves to graduation, the Buffalos still aim to defend its league crown.

The start to the Pioneer League portion of the 2010 schedule didn’t get off with as much of a bang as the Buffalos had hoped, as they fell to Wellsville in a rain-shortened game that was called in the top of the fifth inning. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader will be made up next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Wellsville.

Just like the lightning that dominated the sky Tuesday night, the Wellsville offense struck Prairie View hard, especially at the onset, when the Eagles plated three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. Wellsville cooled off at the plate over the next couple of innings, scoring single runs in the third and fourth, but the damage had already been done.

Prairie View baseball and softball teams opened the season with split decisions in doubleheaders against Pomona-West Franklin on Tuesday.

Both programs learned a valuable lesson in the process — when the first game is over, forget about it and start thinking about the next one.

The Buffalo softball team took advantage of nine walks to cruise to an 11-2 victory against West Franklin in the first game, but got blanked in game two, 4-0.
In contrast, the Prairie View baseball team watched a 5-1 lead evaporate in a 20-7 loss to West Franklin in the opener and bounced back in the second game, using a late rally in a 7-4 victory.

It took a while for the bats to get going, but the Buffalos got on a roll late, scoring four runs with two outs in the sixth inning.

Jake Bradley tied the game with an RBI triple. Jordan Kees and Dakota Danner later connected on back-to-back RBI singles to rally Prairie View past West Franklin 7-4.
Jessica Moore, the Buffalos’ first batter, singled to spark a four-run first inning for the softball team, which included walks from Casey Thayer, Hannah Behm and Samantha Owens.

The offense didn’t let up as the Buffalos added one run in the third on a two-out single by Candice Wilson and two more in the fifth with two outs for a 7-0 lead.
Behm, a senior pitcher, allowed just two runs .

The Prairie View boys’ basketball team spent most of Tuesday night playing catch-up.

As hard as the Buffalos worked in the second half to get back in the contest, the double-digit deficit they faced proved to be too much as Anderson County went on to record a 59-45 home victory.

“We were never really in the game,” Prairie View coach Tyler Applegate said. “We dug a big hole and could not get out of it. Anderson County shot very well in the first half, and we let them have easy shots. We did a poor job of rebounding on both ends.”

Taylor Brown scored a game-high 19 points. Jordan Kees added 12, Alex Watson five, Ryan Welker four, Keaton Hines three and Cody Phillips two.
