There is an old saying that good things always come in pairs.
Just ask Joey Morrisey.
Morrisey, a Pleasanton junior, won his second straight state individual golf title after he shot a 74 at the Class 1A state golf tournament in McPherson. A year earlier, Morrisey won the 2A crown when he carded a 75 at the Class 2A state tournament in Salina.
The Pleasanton product showed why he is the best golfer in the area and why he is the 2010 Tri-County Spotlight Golfer of the Year. Not only did he win the state crown, he dominiated the field.
Morrisey’s score was six strokes better than the runnner-up finisher, Bishop Seabury’s Reed Grabill, who shot an 80 at the Turkey Creek Golf Course. Morrisey’s teammate Gannon Coffman also shot an 80 and finished third overall.
“I was just shocked,” Morrisey said. “I figured it would be a lot closer than that.”
Thanks to Morrisey’s and Coffman’s performances, the Blu-Jays finished runner-up with a 341, just two strokes behind Ashland. It turned out to be a great day for the Pleasanton golf team.

BURLINGTON, Kan. — Pleasanton junior Joey Morrisey got his hands on his first state golf title a year ago, but he isn’t quite done. His ultimate goal is to match the three state titles won by his brother Eddy in 1993, 1995 and 1996.
Tuesday, Joey showed how eager he is to win his second straight Class 2A state title as he carded a 72 to capture the individual title at the season-opening Burlington Invitational, five strokes better than second-place finisher Bryce Fritz of Anderson County, who shot a 77.
Morrisey wasn’t the lone Pleasanton golfer to get in on the medals. All the Blu-Jays did as they carded a four-player score of 341 to place second, edging third-place finisher Jayhawk-Linn (342), which also won team medals, by one stroke. Anderson County used a balanced effort to cruise its way to the team title with a 315.
Gannon Coffman placed 11th overall to earn an individual medal for the Blu-Jays after a two-way tie was broken on the playoff scorecard. He shot an 85. Matt Schmidt finished one shot off Coffman’s pace, carding an 86 for 14th place. Dylan Woods placed 33rd with a 98, while Tyler Poole and Mason Coffman both carded a 100 to place 38th and 39th, respectively.

Ever since he was a little boy, Pleasanton’s Joey Morrisey grew up watching his older brother, Eddy, do some great things in the world of high school golf.
Eddy won three state titles for the Blu-Jays in 1993, 1995 and 1996 and later went to on to compete at the collegiate level. Joey hopes he can match his brother’s amazing feat.
He is well on his way.
Joey, a sophomore, won his first state title as he carded a 75 to win the Class 2A state golf tournament at Salina Municipal Golf Course on May 28. The title made him an easy pick to be Tri-County Spotlight Golfer of the Year.
Most people would be ecstatic to win a state title at a certain age, but not so much with Joey.
“It doesn’t feel any different,” he said. “I just have to keep going at the same pace, practice every day and get all the work in I can. I didn’t feel much pressure. I just went out there, played and it happened.”
Joey won the state tournament by two strokes over Trego Community High School’s Eric Cunningham of WaKenney and put up one of his most impressive scores of the season at the right time. But in the back of his mind, it still wasn’t good enough.
“It wasn’t really what I wanted to shoot,” he said. “I wanted to shoot under par. I did it in the practice rounds pretty easy, but then the winds picked up, it got tough.
“The weather was awful. It rained for about 11 holes, and it finally let up and quit. The wind blew a lot, and it was pretty cold. It wasn’t much fun.”
The Pleasanton sophomore shot his best score of the season, a 72, at Sugar Valley Golf Course — his home away from home.
Before, during and after the golf season, when Morrisey isn’t at home, he can usually be found hitting balls, working on his short game and doing whatever he can to improve at the Mound City course.
“Every day, I am pretty much on the golf course,” Joey said. “My parents take me over there and just go play. I stay till dark and play most of the day.”
It is that dedication that has led Joey to be one of the best golfers in the state. Now he is going after another goal — to be the best golfer in the family.
He wants to match his brother’s mark.
“That is what I have been practicing for my entire life — to win three,” Joey said. |

The Pleasanton Mid-Season Basketball Tournament is off and running.
And so are the Central Heights Lady Vikings.
Central Heights pushed the pace with its transition game, and that translated into easy baskets, with many coming in a 24-point second quarter that helped to pave the way for a 57-33 victory over the Crest Lancers in the first round of the tournament Tuesday.
Elli Ouellette benefited from the Lady Vikings pushing the ball. She scored 20 points.
“Elli had a good night shooting,” Central Heights coach David Clayton said, “but she was the one that benefited from our pushing the ball. Our defensive rebounder and the guards that got her the ball assisted in her offensive explosion.”
Marissa Cox added 11 points.
