Errors can come back to haunt both Jayhawk-Linn and Prairie View baseball teams Tuesday. When one squad made a miscue or series of them, the other was there to take advantage.

Jayhawk-Linn was on the receiving end of some bounces in game one, a contest in which Prairie View allowed six unearned runs in an 11-10 Jayhawk victory. The nightcap proved to be much the same, although this time it was the Buffalos who took advantage of eight Jayhawk miscues, in an 18-8 Prairie View victory.

In the opener, Jayhawk-Linn looked strong as it built a 10-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Prairie View scored six runs on three errors. The Jayhawks put up a big insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 11-8 lead. That run proved to be crucial as Prairie View scored two times in its half of the inning, but couldn’t quite get over the hump.

Quincy Hodges picked up the victory on the mound for the Jayhawks, improving his record to 3-3. He looked to pick up the complete-game victory, but with Prairie View registering three consecutive hits, he was pulled in favor of Kyle Ligman, who retired one of two batters he faced to earn his first save on the season.

BURLINGTON, Kan. — The Jayhawk-Linn track and field teams came into the Burlington Invitational a tired bunch Monday. It was the third meet the Jayhawks had competed in the last week, which included the two-day Kansas Relays in Lawrence.

Even as drained as the Jayhawks were, they put forth some solid performances. Behind two first-place finishes, five second-place finishes and two third-place finishes, the Jayhawk girls captured the team title with 74 points. Jayhawk-Linn was second in the boys’ team standings with 86.

Meriel Long delivered the first of two gold medals for the Jayhawk girls in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 55.34 seconds.

The Jayhawks also earned two medals in the relays, winning the 4x100 relay (Chelsea Beckman, Morgan Eastwood, Shelby Krull, Taylor Dawson) in 53.21 seconds and placing second in the 4x400 relay (Eastwood, Dawson, Beckman, Meriel Long) in 4:25.09.

Beckman registered a toss of 100 feet, 11 inches for second place in the discus. She also was second in the 200 dash in 28.32.

Eastwood placed second and third in the 300 hurdles (48.69) and 100 hurdles (16.81), respectively. Dawson earned a bronze medal in the 400 dash (1:03.48).
Steven Mann easily won both the boys’ long jump (22-2.75) triple jump (44-5). That’s in addition to capturing gold in the 100 dash (11.19).

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Fresh off recording its first win in the Pioneer League, a 16-point triumph over Prairie View, the Jayhawk-Linn boys’ basketball team was anxious to see how that momentum would carry over into Tuesday evening’s Class 2A substate tournament quarterfinal against Pittsburg St. Mary’s Colgan.
Things didn’t quite work out how they planned.

Colgan applied heavy defensive pressure on Jayhawk-Linn from the onset, and that spelled doom for the Jayhawks. Colgan forced Jayhawk-Linn into committing nearly 20 turnovers in the first half alone, and that allowed the Panthers to gain a 19-point lead at halftime, ultimately sending the Jayhawks to a season-ending 64-33 loss.
Colgan didn’t waste any time taking control. The Panthers took a 23-10 first quarter lead, before extending that advantage to 38-19 at intermission and 50-25 after three quarters.

Clayton Dierksen had a strong performance in his final game in a Jayhawk uniform, scoring a game-high 14 points. Steven Mann added six points, Jake Rowe four, Taylor Kellerman three, and Ben Rowe, Seth Gabbert and Nick Thompson two each. Mann, Thompson, Dane Jaeger and Chisolm Sluder also suited up for the final time for the Jayhawks.

Jayhawk-Linn finished the season with a 6-15 record.

Confidence is a funny thing when it comes to basketball.

Considering postseason play got underway this week, Jayhawk-Linn girls’ basketball coach Charlie Beckman knows this is a good time of the season to possess that quality. It is showing up at the right time for the Jayhawks. It certainly was noticeable Tuesday as the Jayhawks shot 47.6 percent (20 of 42) from the field in recording a 54-20 victory over West Elk in the first round of the Class 2A substate tournament in Mound City.

“We played pretty well,” Beckman said. “We controlled the boards and shot the ball well.”

It wasn’t just the offense that got the job done for the Jayhawks (15-6) earlier this week, their defense showed up in a big way as well. West Elk was limited to just seven field goals and seven points or less in every quarter.

The shots weren’t falling at a high rate for the Jayhawks early on, as they made just five of 13 field goal attempts in the opening quarter, but their ability to draw contact helped them jump out to a 16-7 lead. Jayhawk-Linn went to the foul line six times in the quarter, making five attempts, three by Amory Miller and two by Meriel Long.
Long scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first half. Miller and Emma Hargrove each had 11, Taylor Dawson 10, Chelsea Beckman six, and Jessica Walters and Emily Aikins two each.

Jayhawk-Linn broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring West Elk 14-2 during that span to gain a 30-9 halftime advantage.

It’s been a close call for the Jayhawk-Linn boys’ basketball team in two recent games.

The Jayhawks, a squad which has been seeking its first win in Pioneer League play, have come awfully close in getting over that hump. But in losses last week to Anderson County and Wellsville, Jayhawk-Linn was on the wrong end of the final score.

There was only one final chance for the Jayhawks to record their first league win — Tuesday against Prairie View.
The streak is finally over.

Thanks to solid play from seniors Steven Mann, a 6-foot guard, and Clayton Dierksen, a 6-foot-7-inch post, the Jayhawks recorded their first league win, a 52-36 road triumph over the Buffalos.

“I thought my boys played really well,” Jayhawk-Linn coach Matt Hoffman said. “It feels good to get a win in our last game of the regular season.”
