1935-2010
Major John E. Webster, 75, officer, gentleman and hero, of Falcon Heights, Minn., formerly of Paola, died peacefully July 27, 2010, surrounded by his family. 
He was born March 3, 1935, in Paola to William L. Webster Sr. and Lillian Estelle Dillard Webster. He was a 1953 graduate of Paola High School.
He was a trailblazer in his church and his community.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Edward Jr., and siblings William, Frank, Charles and Edna.
Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Bea J. Webster; children, Carla and Hayward Norman; Tami and Carl Greene and Jackson D. and Shea Webster; nine grandchildren; siblings Fred and Virginia Webster, David and Maxcine Webster and Gloria Webster; and sister-in-law, Helen Webster.

1948-2010
Richard E. Koopman, 61, Paola, died at his home Aug. 1, 2010. 
Richard was born on Oct. 27, 1948, in Ottawa to Lentz and Frieda Prothe Koopman. He graduated from Paola High School in 1966. He attended Kansas City Community College for two years.
He was retired from the Olathe Post Office after working more than 30 years. His hobbies were watching all kinds of sporting events. He was especially fond of the Kansas Jayhawks, the Royals and the Chiefs. He fully enjoyed any activities that involved the children within the family. He also enjoyed the game of golf. He was very attentive to his mother, as she was to him, before her passing in 2004. It was a rare occasion to see one without the other. One of their greatest pleasures in life was sharing a meal with family or friends. He enjoyed a good game of cards with friends and family.
He never met a stranger and enjoyed a good conversation. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Paola.

1924-2010
Mary Jane Staley, 86, Overland Park, died Aug. 3, 2010, at home. 
She was born April 2, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., the eighth child of nine children of Charles and Thusnelda Quackenbush.
On Jan. 27, 1945, she married Marvin Wilburn Staley of Kansas City, Mo. Marvin died in October 2008.
Mary lived her entire life in the Kansas City area. She was well-known for her sweetness, vivaciousness and beauty. During World War II, she constantly wrote to servicemen to boost their spirits.
Her favorite pastime was to have coffee with her friends at McDonald’s. Going out to see family and friends was her favorite thing in the world. She enjoyed bowling with her husband throughout their lives.

1916-2010
Josephine Thoms, 94, Paola, died Aug. 2, 2010, at the Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Center in Gardner. 
Josephine was born May 3, 1916, in rural Miami County to Joseph Francis and Anna Lucy Chamberlin Stephens.
She grew up in the area, and on Oct. 5, 1932, she married Floyd Bell Thoms in Olathe. She and Floyd worked on the family farm where she helped work in the fields and hauled grain to market. Together they raised three daughters and one son.
Her hobbies were canning, cooking, growing flowers and gardening, fishing and hunting with her husband, spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren, and she was always worrying about everyone else’s needs.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, eight sisters, one brother and one grandson.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Everett Massey, 81, Rich Hill, Mo., father of Mike Massey of Parker, died Aug. 2, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Kansas City. Visitation is 11 a.m. Friday at the Odin Community Church in Hartville, Mo., with a service to follow. Burial will be at the Godwin Cemetery in Lebanon, Mo. Arrangements are by the Ava Family Funeral Home in Ava, Mo. |
