Miami County Commissioners decided Wednesday to give a little more time to owners of a business that has been vacant for almost two years in the hopes it still can be sold on the market.
Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to extend the time period the owners have to reinstitute the activity of a conditional use for research and development activities related to animal services on 15 acres located at the northeast corner of 239th Street and Antioch Road.

After more than a month of discussion, including a review of four revised versions of the projected 2011 budget, Miami County officials are getting close to publishing a finalized version for the public to review.
Miami County Commissioners have discussed a number of different budget changes during the past few weeks that could increase or decrease the mill levy, but the most recent proposed budget reviewed Wednesday is very similar to last year. In fact, the proposed mill levy of 41.456 is exactly the same as the current mill levy.

Budget numbers again dominated the discussion among Miami County commissioners during a study session Wednesday morning as they reviewed a revised draft of the 2011 county budget.
County officials are working to get the budget where they want it before they publish it for the public to see — something they must do by July 30.
The revised proposed budget includes a slight decrease in the county levy from 41.456 to 41.371 mills. The original proposed 2011 budget included a slight increase in the mill levy from 41.456 to 41.844.

District Judge Amy Harth is asking for more information from the Miami County Commission before ruling on a case in which Miami County Rural Water District No. 2 would like to build a new water tower on the east side of Lackman Road just north of 247th Street.
RWD No. 2’s proposal was shot down in January, when it did not receive the required number of votes from the commission. Several residents spoke out against the project, and a protest petition was filed. At least four votes were required to override the protest petition and grant the conditional-use permit for the tower. The project got only three votes.

The role of Miami County Administrator Shane Krull was discussed by county commissioners Wednesday during a work session.
At a previous meeting, Commissioner Lyle Wobker had asked that the issue be addressed because he didn’t think current regulations regarding personnel were being properly followed. Thus, the study session was scheduled.
Wobker specifically stated Wednesday that he wanted to avoid situations in which commissioners would ask Krull to fire an employee — something he insinuated had happened in the past without Krull knowing the complete facts about the situation ahead of time.
Instead, he wanted Krull to have complete control of personnel decisions as listed in regulations.
Krull handed out a copy of the resolution approved when the administrator position was created. Among the duties listed are setting the agenda for commission meetings, preparing the budget and hiring and firing all nonelected county employees.
Commissioner Ron Stiles said he thinks Krull should maintain the responsibility of hiring and firing, but he would like to see commissioners become more involved in the performance evaluation process for department heads.
