FORT SCOTT — Travis Hayes, Nick Wilson and Isaac Cotton hit double figures to help keep the Paola High school boys’ basketball team in its Class 4A substate playoff game against Fort Scott on Monday.

The Tigers (14-7) proved to be too much for the Panthers, eliminating Paola (8-13) with a 53-40 victory on its home court.

Fort Scott jumped out on an 11-2 run in the first three minutes. Paola answered Fort Scott over the last five minutes, but the damage had been done in an 18-9 advantage for the Tigers when the opening quarter expired.

It was an evenly played game the rest of the way. Fort Scott outscored Paola by just four points in the final three quarters to hang on for the 13-point win.
Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter. Fort Scott edged Paola by identical scores of 12-10 in the third and fourth quarters.

“You have nothing to hang your heads about,” Paola coach Dave Cash told his players in the locker room. “You played hard, and that is what I expected you to do all year.

“Do I wish we could have won more games? Sure,” Cash said. “I did not want the season to end either, I never do. You did some very good things this year. When we had some bumps in the road, you came back ready to go to work.”

Fort Scott sank two more baskets than Paola (16-14), but hit seven 3-pointers compared to three for the Panthers.

The Tigers hit five 3-pointers in the first half, building a 29-20 lead at the intermission.

Down the stretch, it came down to free throws. Fort Scott was working the clock with a 10-point lead, and Paola was forced to foul, putting the Tigers on the line.
Fort Scott sank just one field goal in the fourth quarter, but went to the line for 11 free throws and put down nine of them to hold on for the 10-point victory.
Paola shot 66 percent from the line in the final frame, but got to the foul line for only three attempts, making good on two of them.

Nick Wilson led the Panthers with 12 points. He made four field goals and added four of five from the foul line.

Cotton and Hayes each had 10 points. Cotton made a pair of field goals, including two 3-pointers. Hayes hit four field goals and was two for three from the line.
Other players scoring for Paola were Justin Dunmars, Skylar Hawkins, Brandon Goodman and Connor Kresin.

Playing in his final game for the Panthers was senior center Jesse Smail.

“Jesse came out and was a great leader for you guys,” Cash said. “You juniors need to think about what kind of leaders you want to be.”
