Aggressive play is one thing the Jayhawk-Linn girls’ team saw out of its guards in Tuesday’s regular-season finale in La Cygne. As a result, the Jayhawks were able to get to the free-throw line 30 times — 10 attempts in the first quarter alone — and make 18 attempts en route to a 48-41 victory over Prairie View. “We got the ball inside and took it to the basket,” Jayhawk-Linn coach Charlie Beckman said. “Our guards did a great job of finding our posts.” Jayhawk-Linn (14-6) set the tone with its defense, limiting Prairie View (7-12) to just two baskets in gaining a 14-4 advantage after one quarter. Bailey Thayer buried three field goals in the second quarter for the Buffalos. The Jayhawks, however, were still ahead by double digits. Meriel Long had a big quarter for Jayhawk-Linn, scoring 11 of her game-high 19 points in the stanza. Prairie View’s defense slowed down Jayhawk-Linn in the third quarter, outscoring the Jayhawks 13-8 to cut the lead to nine points entering the fourth, but the Buffalos weren’t able to overcome the double-digit deficit they once faced. Amory Miller added 11 points for the Jayhawks, Taylor Dawson 10, Shelby Krull and Chelsea Beckman three each, while Emma Hargrove had two. Devon Morris paced the Buffalos with 10 points. Melanie Sommer registered nine points, Thayer eight, Jessica Solo seven, Jacey Moreland three, and Jessica Garrett and Brittany Owings two each. Substate tournament brackets were released Wednesday. Prairie View, a No. 5 seed, will travel to Louisburg on Monday for a first-round matchup in the 4A tournament against the fourth-seeded Wildcats. In 2A action, third seed Jayhawk-Linn will host sixth seed West Howard/West Elk that same evening.
