In the first quarter of Tuesday’s game with Bonner Springs, everything seemed to be going fine for the Louisburg boys’ basketball team. The Wildcats were hitting shots. They caused turnovers and played with a good amount of intensity. They were poised for a second-straight win. All that quickly changed. Louisburg couldn’t contain the Bonner Springs players and the Braves went on a tear that led to a 72-56 rout in Louisburg. The intensity was gone, the shots weren’t falling and the Braves took control quickly. “We just gave up,” Louisburg coach Chad Harvey said. “Our intensity level went down. Our teamwork went down. I guess we thought the game was over after the first quarter because we didn’t play after that.” The Wildcats (10-7) set the nets ablaze in the first quarter and they took a 20-11 lead. Stephen McTeer and David Embers helped the cause with a couple 3-pointers and Louisburg seemed to have its way every time down the floor. In the second quarter, however, Bonner Springs began to assert itself. The Braves outscored the Wildcats 17-8 in the quarter and tied the game at 28-all at halftime. Bonner Springs’ B.J. Watson came alive for 28 points, 19 of which came in the second half, and the Wildcats had a tough time keeping Watson and his teammates out of the lane. “We just couldn’t keep anyone in front of us,” Harvey said. “We weren’t moving our feet and we were letting guys fly right by us. I thought we knew how to play defense better than that. That was probably the worst defensive performance I have been around.” Louisburg trailed just 48-41 heading into the fourth quarter, but Bonner pulled away thanks to Watson and the Wildcats never got closer than seven. Sophomore Garrett Griffin led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points, while Embers and Drew Harding finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Wildcats will try and get back on track tonight when they host rival Paola on Senior Night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. “These guys better come ready to play because Paola is on fire right now,” Harvey said. “They will take it to us if we don’t.”
