The starters for the Osawatomie boys’ basketball team have become good bench-warmers. With several of their recent games, particularly in Pioneer League play, having been decided by the third quarter, the Trojan starters have been able to enjoy a nice view of the action from the team’s bench late in those games. It was another victory in league play for Osawatomie Tuesday, when the Trojans, ranked eighth in the latest coaches’ poll, rode the momentum of a 22-point second quarter to a 66-37 home victory over the Wellsville Eagles, their eighth straight victory overall. Wellsville made it a game early on. After a couple of Eagle turnovers led to baskets by Seth Jones and Brendan Soucie for a quick 7-0 Trojan lead, Wellsville’s Drake Carolan and Jacob Brown combined to score six consecutive points later in the first quarter to cut Osawatomie’s lead to 10-9. Osawatomie’s offense soon started to take over. Behind good ball movement, the Trojans were able to find the basket regularly in the second quarter. Soucie worked hard down low to grab three consecutive rebounds on one series, but Jones was there to put back Soucie’s third miss for a 26-14 Osawatomie lead midway through the quarter, forcing Wellsville to call a time-out. Jones later capped off a big half not only for him, but for Osawatomie, as he buried a 3-pointer just as the buzzer sounded to extend the Trojan lead to 35-17 at intermission. Jones scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half. Soucie and Oakes also played big roles offensively, scoring 11 points each. Soucie also pulled down eight rebounds, in addition to four blocked shots. Tyler Wright added seven points, Daine Needham five, Jacob Vail four, Spencer Booe and Dylon Needham three each, while Dustin Kueser made a free-throw. “We were just moving the ball pretty well,” Jones said. “It wasn’t just me creating my own shot. It was just swinging the ball and getting open shots.” The Trojan defense did its part. The pressure Osawatomie applied on Wellsville forced the Eagles into committing 24 turnovers. Osawatomie (15-2 overall, 7-0 Pioneer League) can clinch the Pioneer League title tonight with a victory over second-place Central Heights (14-3, 6-1), which trailed the Trojans in the league standings by one game following Tuesday’s win over Prairie View. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. “Central Heights is probably the second-best team in our league,” Jones said. “They gave us a pretty good fight the last time we played them. We’ve got to come out ready to play because it’s at their place this time. We’ve got to play good.”
