Brendan Soucie provided a slight scare for the Osawatomie boys’ basketball team Tuesday. Soucie went up for a dunk attempt during the first quarter, and when he landed on the court, he rolled his left ankle. He was taken out of the game shortly thereafter. Soucie tested the ankle against Prairie View later in the quarter, but was still feeling some pain. Not wanting to risk further injury, he was taken out and watched the remainder of the game from the sidelines after being taped up. Considering the depth Osawatomie has, the Trojans didn’t need him on this night. Osawatomie took control early, limiting Prairie View to just three field goals in the first half, en route to a 72-44 road victory over the Buffalos. Heavy defensive pressure applied by Osawatomie’s man-to-man and press defenses forced Prairie View into committing 23 turnovers. Several of those turnovers led to baskets the other way for the Trojans. Brandon Oakes picked the pocket of a Prairie View ball handler and ran the court for a layup while being fouled with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter. He missed the ensuing free throw on the potential three-point play, but his basket gave the Trojans an early 14-3 lead. “Coach (Darren Soucie) always tells us to play fundamental defense and to take advantage of whenever they make a mistake,” Oakes said. “Prairie View could only go to the dominant side of the court, not the weak side.” Osawatomie (13-2 overall, 5-0 Pioneer League) didn’t let off the gas pedal. A Dustin Kueser jumper gave the Trojans their biggest advantage of the night, 39-10, late in the second quarter. Eleven Trojans found their way into the scorebook on the night. Seth Jones paced Osawatomie with 14 points. Oakes added 11, Tyler Wright 10, Daine Needham and Jacob Vail eight each, Kueser six, Spencer Booe five, Derrick Kueser four, Allen Raymer and Tanner Lucas three each, and Brendan Soucie two. The reserves for Osawatomie saw extended playing time, starting late in the second quarter. Prairie View, meanwhile, had some opportunities to make it a close game early, but missed four open looks. The Buffalos later got into foul trouble as two players collected their third fouls before halftime. Despite trailing by 40-13 at intermission, Prairie View didn’t give up. A pair of free throws by Ryan Welker midway through the third quarter cut Osawatomie’s lead to 12 points, but the Trojans always seemed to have an answer, particularly at the free-throw line, where they went 13 of 21 in the second half alone. Taylor Brown led the Buffalos (4-11, 1-4) with 14 points and seven rebounds. Welker added seven points. Cody Phillips chipped in six points, Chad Fetters, Alex Watson and Michael Fraser three each, and Keaton Hines and Logan Smith two each.
