A stingy defense and a relentless offensive attack, two things the Paola girls’ basketball team had been lacking in the second half this season, propelled the Panthers to a 74-55 victory against the De Soto Wildcats on Tuesday evening.

The victory also set a new trend for the Panthers, putting the girls on a two-game winning streak.

It was also the first time this season the Panthers had four players in double figures. Senior guard Allison Wood posted double digits in scoring for the first time in her career, sinking two field goals and six of eight from the line for 10 points.

“It was a big win,” Wood said. “It is good to have a winning streak. It felt good, we played really well tonight.”

Coming into the game the De Soto Wildcats were the top-rated defense in the Frontier League, Paola coach Stuart Ross said.

Paola was patient in running its offense and spread the ball well, getting points from eight players in the victory.

“It was a new story for us,” Ross said, “getting offense and defense in the second half.

“We have struggled in the second half and we talked about it,” he said. “Our emphasis tonight was to play a strong third quarter. The girls did really well with that, and it all started with defense.”

Paola led by three points at the break, 29-26, and extended its lead with a 17-14 edge in the third quarter.

Down the stretch, the Panthers were money at the foul line, sinking 13 of 14 attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the game with a 28-15 run.

Winners of its last two games, the Paola Panthers improved to 5-8 on the season.

Guard Courtney Johnson led all scorers with 26 points. Johnson scored eight points in the first half and 18 in the second. She made 10 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and hit three of four from the foul line.

Kylee Mader was an offensive spark early and a playmaker late, scoring eight of her 10 points in the first half.

Rachel Schmidt, who scored six points in each half, hit double figures with 12 points.

Other players scoring for Paola were Mackenzie Hallstrom, Cheyenne Rankin, Annie Kessler and Ann Pomatto.

Paola is on the road tonight against the Cyclones in Ottawa, looking to make it three wins in a row.
