Nothing much seemed to be going right in the first half for the Louisburg boys’ basketball team.
The Wildcats couldn’t get a good shot against Maize South’s zone defense. Louisburg let Maize’s Evan Allen explode for 14 points, and he got to the basket with ease. But that wasn’t the worst of it. “We just didn’t have any excitement,” Louisburg coach Chad Harvey said. “When we play at home, we need to come out with some fire, and we didn’t have that. This wasn’t a good atmosphere. It is not the fans’ fault because we need to give them a reason to come.” Louisburg gave them a reason in the second half, as it woke up for a 56-40 home victory Tuesday after trailing by two points at halftime. The Wildcats came out with fire in the second half, especially senior Drew Harding. Harding scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as he wheeled through the Mavericks’ zone defense. Harding’s play seemed to lift the rest of his team as well. “We made some adjustments in the second half with their zone, but it all started with Drew,” Harvey said. “He put us on his back and he carried us. He opened up opportunities for other guys on the team, and we were more efficient on offense. Drew is capable of taking over a game whenever he wants and that is how he has to play for us.” The Wildcats (8-5) actually jumped out to a 9-2 lead to start the game, thanks to five straight points from senior Stephen McTeer and buckets from Ross Dvorak and Garrett Griffin. However, the Mavericks, led by Allen, went on a run of its own and eventually grabbed the lead midway through the second quarter. McTeer, who finished with 15 points, scored eight points to heat up his team in the third quarter and Harding took care of the rest. Allen had to sit with four fouls in the third quarter and Louisburg promptly went on an 8-0 run to take control of the game. “Stephen did a great job hitting shots,” Harvey said. “That is what he does. He is a streaky shooter, but that is why I talk about atmosphere. Those streaky shooters start hitting a lot of those shots when he hears the noise behind him and he did his job.” The Wildcats took a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter and went on a 13-4 run to seal the win on baskets from Harding, McTeer and Griffin. Along with Harding and McTeer, Griffin also finished in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Louisburg returns to action tonight when it hosts Eudora for homecoming. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
