If the Prairie View girls’ basketball had any intentions of staging a late rally against Anderson County on Tuesday, the Buffalos needed to focus on doing the little things. Every point, every rebound, every pass became that much more magnified.

In the end, those little things paid off. Prairie View was able to rally from a nine-point deficit to defeat Anderson County 37-34 on its home court.
Playing with an increased energy level was the key.

“It is hard to say what was the turning point,” Prairie View coach Ron Price said. “We played more tenacious and hit the boards hard and contested every shot.”

Prairie View had trouble finding the basket during the first three quarters, recording just under two dozen points during that span and trailing 31-22 entering the final quarter. But, key fast-break points and making free throws with the lead on the line helped the team cap off a comeback.

Melanie Sommer contributed seven key points in the fourth after not scoring at all during the first three quarters. Devon Morris registered five of her nine points in the final period.
Meanwhile, Jessica Solo made three of four foul shots late in the contest, finishing with five points. Jessica Garrett had six, Erin Roche and Jacey Moreland four each, and Bailey Thayer two.

“Melanie hustles well, and our team feeds off her defensive energy,” Price said. “... It was good to get a league win against a tough opponent, Anderson County is a quality opponent despite what their record is.”

Prairie View’s annual winter courtwarming ceremony will follow the 6 p.m. girls’ varsity game tonight against Jayhawk-Linn.
