The shots weren’t falling at a good rate for the Jayhawk-Linn girls’ basketball team during the first three quarters of Tuesday’s road game against Wellsville. The shots were quality ones, but they just simply fell off the rim. “We missed a lot of open shots,” Jayhawk-Linn assistant coach Rick Long said. “Coach (Jay) Applegate said we missed nine open lay-ups that were uncontested, many of them coming during the first three quarters.” Long figured the shots would start falling at some point. They finally did in the fourth quarter, where Jayhawk-Linn outscored Wellsville 16-2 in the stanza to rally for a 44-33 home victory. Meriel Long played a big role offensively in the final quarter, scoring 13 of her game-high 22 points, including five free-throws. Taylor Dawson added nine, Chelsea Beckman five, Amory Miller four, and Jessica Walters and Emma Hargrove two each. “Meriel took over in the fourth quarter,” coach Long said. The Jayhawk defense stepped up big time on the night. Long praised Shelby Krull’s efforts for holding Wellsville’s Madison Chambers to just seven points. “We played excellent defense,” Long said. “Wellsville had some opportunities to shoot the ball, but missed some of their shots.” BOYS The Jayhawk boys had Wellsville right where they wanted them. Jayhawk-Linn trailed by just six points and hoped to overtake the Eagles at some point. Wellsville had other thoughts as the Eagles toughened up on the defensive end and limited the Jayhawks to just six second-half points on its way to a 67-39 victory. Trenton Meyer proved to be unstoppable as he scored a game-high 32 points for the Eagles. Taylor Kellerman led the Jayhawks with 16 points. Steven Mann had five, Seth Gabbert four, and Austin Coleman and Clayton Dierksen two each. Jayhawk-Linn returns to the court tonight at Prairie View. Tip-off for the girls’ game is slated for 6 p.m., the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.
