Hillsdale Elementary School students were treated to an early Thanksgiving turkey dinner Tuesday morning, courtesy of the school’s Parent Teacher Organization. It had only been a week since the PTO sponsored another lunch for the children as a reward for receiving nine exemplary awards on the state assessment tests. “It’s just one more showing of the parents’ support,” said principal Amy Hastert. The meal has been a tradition for the school for at least 17 years, she added.
Hillsdale Bank Bar B-Q, following tradition, provided the turkey. The rest of the meal was cooked by each of the classes. Kindergarten students put together cups of trail mix, first-graders made applesauce, second-graders made the corn, third grade students made mashed potatoes, fourth-graders made pumpkin desert and fifth grade students made rolls. Hastert said the event is a big deal for the children, one which they’re sure to remember. She said she’s heard from some college students who went through Hillsdale Elementary, and they recalled the Thanksgiving feast as one of their fondest memories. Third-grader Jackson Wellman said his favorite part of the feast was the pumpkin cake. He also said it was fun mashing the potatoes. Wellman said he’s thankful for his family this Thanksgiving, and looks forward to spending the break with them in Texas. While he enjoys the meal, he said it’s not his favorite part of the school year. “The last day (is my favorite),” he said, “and field trips.” Hillsdale students weren’t the only ones getting into the Thanksgiving spirit Tuesday. Cottonwood Elementary School kindergarten students in Paola had a similar celebration — including pilgrim and Native American costumes and pumpkin pie. Lining the wall of the school’s kindergarten wing Tuesday hung a number of Thanksgiving projects completed by the students. One project had the students color a large picture of a turkey that says “I’m not a turkey.” Below the picture, the students wrote what they really were and then drew a picture of it. Some of the responses included, “I’m not a turkey, I’m a fairy,” and “I’m not a turkey, I’m a robot.” Other students chose to be a tree, clown, princess, Santa, cowboy, Batman, Indian, elf, pirate, Harry Potter and Miss America.
Another project had the students color a turkey, and then write certain words on its feathers. The students finished the day by enjoying a Thanksgiving favorite — pumpkin pie.
