EMPORIA — Brian Shay, a 1995 graduate of Paola High School, will become a member of the Emporia State University Athletics Hall of Honor on Saturday. Shay will be honored, along with four other individuals and a national champion Hornets softball team, as part of homecoming festivities at Emporia State. Shay (1995-98), a three-time All-American and the 1998 Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the top player in NCAA Division II, ended his career with the Hornets as the all-time leading rusher in the history of college football with 6,958 yards. The Harlon Hill Trophy is the NCAA Division II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. He set 17 NCAA Division II records, including five records set for all divisions. He also set the mark for college football players in touchdowns (88), all-purpose yards (9,301) and points (544). During his senior year at Emporia State, Shay ran for a Hornet and MIAA record 2,265 yards and 29 touchdowns. Shay signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent and was a member of the team’s practice squad. He later was assigned to the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe and played for the Orlando Rage in the XFL. He is a member of the Paola High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He ran for 1,786 yards and 27 touchdowns his senior year to help lead the Panthers to a 13-0 undefeated football state championship in 1994. The Emporia State inductees will join a group of 154 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators and eight teams in the Hall of Honor. Other inductees are track and field and cross country coach Phil Delavan (1966-78), 18-time conference track and field champion Dendra Doubrava (1994-99), women’s basketball player Aneta Kausaite (1996-98), women’s basketball player and 1999 MIAA MVP Jurgita Kausaite (1997-99) and the 1983 NAIA national championship Emporia State Hornets softball team, which went 27-8.
