A touchdown run by Mitchell Sloan, touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Henn to wideout Hunter Locke and a safety by Christian Peuser led the Paola Middle School eighth-grade football team to an 18-14 victory against Baldwin. The Baldwin Bulldogs struck first Oct. 20, converting on two third-down plays and a fourth down and one, to take a 6-0 lead with 2:43 left in the first quarter. The Panthers stopped the Bulldogs’ run on the two-point conversion attempt. Paola answered in the second quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by Sloan with 7:32 left in the first half. Sloan ran for the two-point conversion, making it 8-6. A 35-yard touchdown pass play put Baldwin back on top with 5:43 left in the second quarter. The conversion pass was good, giving the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead. Henn started to heat up late in the half, playing a little pitch and catch with Locke, one of his summer all-star baseball teammates. Henn hooked up with Locke for an eight-yard gain, moving the chains for a first and 10 at the 50. Brennan Haley powered up the middle for four yards. It was time to air it out again. Henn connected with Locke in stride on a 35-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 14-14 with 1:37 left in the first half. Haley ran for the two-point conversion for a 16-14 Panther lead. Christian Peueser made a heads up play on a squib kick by Baldwin to open the second half, falling on it for Paola at the 48-yard line. Haley and Sloan had big runs to drive Paola inside the Baldwin 20-yard line, but the Panthers turned the ball over with a fumble at the Bulldogs five. Peuser sacked Baldwin’s quarterback in the end zone, giving Paola two points for the safety, increasing the lead to four points, 18-14, with 2:46 left in the quarter. Baldwin was forced to kickoff from its own 20-yard line. Sloan returned the kick 20 yards, setting Paola up with a first down at the Baldwin 35-yard line. Henn threw a pass to Sloan to move the chains for a first down at the 19. Paola was threatening to punch it in for another score when Baldwin picked off a pass to end the drive. Baldwin punted the ball and Paola took over at its own 40. Lightning began to brighten the sky northwest of the stadium and the game was stopped in the fourth quarter.
