Area communities will be celebrating the Fourth of July in style. Several towns have celebrations and fireworks displays in the works for this weekend.

Paola’s fireworks show kicks off a weekend of Independence Day fun. The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. tonight at Lake Miola. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Fireworks will be shot from the southeast corner of the lake. Free-will donations will be accepted at the gates.

Louisburg’s annual Freedom Fest begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Lewis-Young Park. Activities include a stage show, kiddie tractor pull, kiddie tractor-barrel rides, an apple pie contest, a local celebrity dog-kissing contest, a walk-in hot air balloon, inflatables, music, a flyover, food and more. At dark, the community’s annual fireworks show will delight onlookers with colorful displays. Free-will donations are accepted at the gate.

Cedar Cove Feline Conservatory & Education Center east of Louisburg is hosting its own Fourth of July event, Rawrs and Stripes. Members of the public are invited to see the big cats in their habitats and partake in a picnic or have children get their faces painted. Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday and close at dark, but the real fun begins at 5:30 p.m., when staff members of Cedar Cove will feed the cats, and the public can watch. Admission is $5, and children 5 and under are free. Cedar Cove is located three miles east of Louisburg on Kansas Highway 68.

Osawatomie will celebrate the holiday with a fireworks display at dusk Saturday at Lynn Dickey Field near Osawatomie High School. The Band of Oz will provide patriotic music. The colorful display is open to the public. Donations are accepted.

In Linn County, two communities are celebrating the Fourth with events Saturday. Pleasanton will have free swimming from noon to 5 p.m. at the pool, and a fishing derby from 9 to 10 a.m. for children 4 to 16. At dusk, a fireworks display will commence at West City Lake. In Blue Mound, the community’s daylong Independence Day celebration features a horseshoe pitch, baby olympics, dog show, a parade, live music and turtle races, among other events. The royal court will be crowned at 8 p.m., and fireworks begin at dusk.

Drexel, Mo., is celebrating 50 years of fireworks with daylong festivities in the park Saturday. Activities include a parade at 10:30 a.m., and throughout the day, barbecue meals, live music, an inflatable slide and obstacle course, raffles, a dunk tank and watermelon and hot dog eating contests. At dusk, the Drexel Lions Club and the city of Drexel join together to shoot off the community’s annual fireworks display. All the fun is happening at H.T. Smith Park in Drexel. Free-will donations will be accepted.
