The Paola boys’ track and field team certainly highlighted the Tri-County track news with its state title in May’s Class 4A state meet in Wichita — the school’s first ever title in track.

A big reason why was Paola’s Big Three: Joe Stephens, Luke Wilson and Antonio Smith. All three tracksters owned several top spots on the Tri-County Spotlight leaderboard.

Stephens, the Tri-County Spotlight Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year, owned the area’s top marks in four different categories. Stephens held the top time in both the 110 (14.4 second) and 300-meter hurdles (39.22) and eventually went on to win a state gold in the 300.

Stephens also set school record marks in the long and triple jumps. Stephens had a top jump of 47 feet, 3 inches in the triple and 23-3 in the long jump.

Wilson owned the shot put and discus in almost every meet. He recorded a top throw in the shot put of 56-3.5 and later set a personal record in the discus at the state meet in 163-03.

Smith was the area’s top sprinter, and his times show why. Smith held a top mark of 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.85 time in the 200-meter dash.

Paola’s Thad Husted and Mike Gamerl held the top times in the distance races. Husted ran a time of 10:36.44 in the 3,200-meter run and Gamerl took the top spot in 4:47.80 in the 1,600-meter run.

The Paola 4x100-meter relay team of Smith, Hayden Mersman, Trent Teuscher and Zach Johnson edged out Jayhawk-Linn for the area’s top time of 44.1 seconds.

Osawatomie held some top marks of its own.

Brendan Soucie had the best high jump of the season after he cleared 6-4 and he also had the top time in the 800-meter run in a school record time of 1:57.57. Soucie wasn’t done, however.

He teamed up with two relays and recorded the area’s best times in both the 4x400 and 4x800. Soucie, along with Derrick Kueser, Dustin Kueser and Trever Cooley, set a school record time at the state meet in the 4x800 in 8:01.49 and took second.

Jameson Greenwood joined Soucie, Dustin Kueser and Cooley to grab the top spot in the 4x400 in 3:26.29.

Louisburg freshman Garrett Griffin had a standout season in the javelin and owned the area’s best throw of 175-5. Teammate Jason Sattler’s sixth-place finish at state in the 400-meter dash earned him a best time of 50.93 seconds.

There was a three-way tie for best mark in the pole vault and two went to Louisburg. Jacob Herbert and Michael Kircher each cleared a height of 12-6, as did Central Heights’ Brock Rickerson.

Girls’ top marks

The Jayhawk-Linn girls’ track team was well-represented at the state meet and on the Tri-County Leaderboard.

The Jayhawks owned eight of the top spots and were led by Girls’ Track Athlete of the Year Morgan Eastwood. In the 100 hurdles, Eastwood had a top time of 15.8 seconds and also had the best mark in the 300 in 47.37 seconds.

Eastwood joined the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays to also take the top spots. The 4x100 team of Eastwood, Taylor Dawson, Cassie Rockers and Chelsea Beckman set a school record time of 50.31 seconds at regionals and finished second at state.

Eastwood, Dawson, Rockers and Meriel Long also took the 4x400 team to a silver medal in 4:10.5.

Dawson went on to have the best time in the 400 dash in 1:00.59, as did Long, whose time of 2:33.58 was the best in the 800. Rockers set a school record with her jump of 35-2.5 in the triple, while Dawson took the long jump in 16-8.5.

Louisburg earned several top marks in the field events, led by senior Chelsea Morland. She threw a personal best of 133-4 in the javelin at regionals.

Colleen O’Brien held on to the top spot in the high jump all season after she cleared 5-4. Gwen Baumgarder set a personal best in the pole vault after she cleared 9-6 at the state meet. Paola’s Jessica Kern tied her for the best mark on the year.

Also for Louisburg, the 4x800 relay of Kaitlin Wertz, Madi Wertz, Jaclyn Abrahamian and Kristen Fisher owned the top time of 11:04.9.

Spring Hill’s Ashley Schoenhofer and Kelsey Carbajo owned the distance races. Schoenhofer earned the best time in the 1,600 in 5:38.7 and Carbajo earned a state medal with her performance of 12:22.86 in the 3,200.

Central Heights’ Kayla Schwab and Marissa Cox had their way in the throws. Schwab medaled at state with a personal best throw of 39-11.5 and Cox led everyone in the discus with toss of 132-0.

Teammate Katelyn Reece had the fastest time in the 200 dash in 28.26 and Annie Kessler’s time of 13 seconds in the 100-meter dash was tops for Paola and the rest of the area.
