The Tri-County Spotlight baseball team has it all — great pitching, good defense and its fair share of power.

There are no holes in this lineup.

Prairie View’s Toby Cornejo, the Tri-County Pitcher of the Year, headlines the group on the mound with some solid numbers. He notched a 7-1 record on the season with just a 2.59 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in nearly 50 innings of work.

When he wasn’t pitching, Cornejo manned the shortstop position for Prairie View and had a .410 batting average, 30 hits and 17 RBI over the season.

The Tri-County Offensive Player of the Year, Central Heights’ Bob Wolfe, couldn’t have had a much better season at the plate. The Vikings’ third baseman had a .489 average, 23 hits, 10 doubles, two home runs and 28 RBI to help his team to another state tournament appearance this season.

Prairie View’s Garrett Claar (first base), Spring Hill’s Jesse Mayes (second base) and Evan Smith (catcher) and Osawatomie’s Sean Callahan (shortstop) join Wolfe on the infield.

Claar was one of the top Buffalo hitters on the season with a .430 average, 26 hits, five doubles, four home runs and 23 RBI to go along with his solid glove at first base. Callahan displayed some power of his own for the Trojans with a .431 average, 25 hits, three home runs and 23 runs scored.

Mayes and Smith helped the Broncos to the substate championship, where they fell to Bishop Ward, but both players were reliable on the field and at the plate. Mayes hit for a .397 average with 27 hits, two triples, a double, one home run and 11 RBI. Smith, on the other hand, hit .416 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and had 17 RBI to go along with his work behind the plate.

Speed and power roam the Tri-County outfield, thanks to Spring Hill’s Jordan Miller, Louisburg’s Canon Teague and Paola’s Austin Porter.

Miller has the highest batting average on the team with a .494 mark on the season and collected 40 hits, 11 doubles, 14 RBI and had 21 runs scored to go along with seven assists and just one error in the outfield.

Teague, who helped the Wildcats to their first state tournament appearance in 10 years, is the lone freshman on the team. He played centerfield for the Wildcats most of the season and led the team in batting average.

As for Porter, he helped the Panthers with a .375 average and displayed a lot of power with five home runs, three doubles and 19 RBI.

At the utility position, Paola’s Jonathn Pomatto helped in a couple of different ways. Pomatto was one of the Panthers’ top hurlers and was their everyday shortstop.

He recorded a .464 average to lead the Panthers and racked up 26 hits, eight doubles, two triples and had 20 RBI. On the mound, he notched a 5-2 record, a 2.67 ERA.
