Like almost everything else, the fee to obtain copies of Kansas motor-vehicle records from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office is going to increase. Miami County commissioners voted Wednesday to raise the MVR fee from $10 to $15, effective July 1. The action came in response to a fee increase to $10 implemented by the state of Kansas; it also takes effect July 1. Miami County Sheriff’s Office personnel collect the fees when filling MVR requests, then forward part of the collected funds to the state. Sheriff Frank Kelly’s office is authorized by state law to assess an additional fee — over and above what is collected and sent on to the state — to cover the processing costs incurred by the local office in providing copies of the records. Some of the processing expenses include the costs of paper, printer ink, printer maintenance and staff time spent accessing the state’s electronic records, finding the requested records and reproducing the records. In accordance with the state statute, the commissioners passed a resolution to ensure that the full costs of providing the service will be paid by those using the service and not by Miami County taxpayers. People who request copies of motor-vehicle records — whether driver’s license info, certificates of title, vehicle registrations or identification cards — are required to certify that the records will be used solely in accordance with state law. MVR fees collected for the state go to the Kansas treasury to the credit of the Electronic Databases Fee Fund, except for a $1 portion per record that goes to the Kansas Highway Patrol training center fund.
