Although Miami County will receive state funding again this year for its local environmental protection plan, it will get nearly $4,500 less than last year. On Wednesday, the Miami County Commission approved a $11,175 grant agreement from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Planning Director Charlene Weiss told commissioners that the county’s plan will have to be implemented with a smaller budget. Last year’s grant was for $15,593 — $4,418 more than this year. Currently, the plan covers the county’s environmental health sanitary code for on-site waste-water systems and private drinking-water supplies, its solid-waste management plan, a permanent household hazardous-waste collection facility, a nonpoint-source pollution-control plan administered by the Miami County Conservation District Office, and a public water-supply protection plan supported by local rural water districts and the Hillsdale Water Quality Project. Miami County’s local environmental protection committee is made up of Weiss in her capacity as Environmental Health Department director and as director of the Planning Department, Miami County Road and Bridge Director J.R. McMahon, Lake Region Solid Waste Coordinator Chris Anton, Kansas State University Watershed Coordinator Herschel George, and USDA National Resources and Conservation District Manager Jenny Jasper. The committee meets formally on an annual or semiannual basis, but maintains contact via telephone and e-mail to coordinate the program and ensure that it operates in accordance with the county plan as specified in the agreement with KDHE. The watershed areas covered by the plan include the lower Marais des Cygnes, South Grand and upper Marais des Cygnes watersheds. The plan for Miami County was first developed in 1991 by a group made up of county employees.
