The spirit of small communities shined brightly Tuesday in the wake of a stormy Monday night that ripped through Beagle, Fontana, Drexel, Mo., and other areas in southern Miami County, northern Linn County and southwestern Cass County in Missouri. Residents took the day off from work Tuesday to help their neighbors saw up trees and pick up limbs and debris in Drexel. National Honor Society students from Prairie View High School helped clean up Fontana. Other neighbors lent a helping hand from Osawatomie to Parker as people woke Tuesday morning to find toppled trees, jagged pieces of tin roofs and downed power lines from the storm that packed winds of 90 to 110 mph. Much clean-up work remains to be done in places such as Drexel and Fontana, which lost part of the roof on its elementary school and was forced to pull up the water-damaged gym floor. The sound of chainsaws could be heard throughout Drexel on Monday evening as people worked to saw up fallen trees. If you can spare a couple of hours this weekend, the clean-up efforts likely will still be underway. Thanks to all those who gave of their time to help these communities get back on their feet.
