Residents of Fontana seemed to bear the brunt of Monday night’s storm, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to homes, public places and Fontana Elementary School.

Prairie View USD 362 Superintendent Chris Kleidosty said damage to the school building was an estimated $150,000. A part of the roof was sheared off by the wind, allowing rain to enter the gymnasium, which ruined it.

Workers from ServiceMaster, a company that specializes in cleaning and disaster recovery work, arrived at the school late Tuesday afternoon to start demolition of the gym floor.

“After we tear out the floor, we’re going to bring in a machine to blow air into the gym to dry it out,” ServiceMaster construction supervisor Bryan McKee said Wednesday. “Our goal is to be completely done in about five days.”

Kleidosty said he was thankful the storm happened during summer, so repairs can be made by the time school starts in August.

Storm damage can be seen throughout Fontana.

A group of National Honor Society students from Prairie View High School heard of the troubles and showed up Wednesday morning to help pick up branches and cut down trees.

“I felt bad for them, because it takes more than just a few people to clean it all up,” PVHS junior Candice Wilson said.

The students split into two groups and worked for about six hours.

“We just went around and picked up stuff for people, even if they were too proud to ask for help,” senior Jessica Solo said.

One house they stopped by belonged to Bill Reeves, who had a tree fall on a car.

“At first, I couldn’t figure out what they were doing,” Reeves said. “Then I saw they were piling branches, so I went out and thanked them.”
