If you wanted anyone to have the ball on the mound in a must-win game, it would be hard to argue with sending Paola Panther Kylee Mader to the pitching rubber.

She held teams to 11 total runs in 70 innings pitched, or less than a run per game. Her earned run average was 0.70.

Opposing hitters were more than twice as likely to strike out against her (92), than get a base hit (39).

Mader, 8-3, took all three losses in one-run games, the third of which was a 2-1 heartbreaker in the Class 4A regional title game against Iola in which an error led to the game-winning run in the seventh.

For her dominance on the mound, Mader was named the Tri-County Spotlight pitcher of the year.

“Kylee wants to be the girl that gets the job done in the circle,” Paola coach Troy Collier said. “I am very proud of her toughness, she brings a bulldog mentality into the circle. She always puts our team in a winning position when she pitches.”

Mader threw five shutouts, including a no-hitter in a 9-0, seven-inning victory against De Soto.

She threw four consecutive shutouts during the season with a streak of 31 consecutive scoreless innings.

“I really didn’t know about the streak,” Mader said. “I just play game to game. I did not realize that. Hearing about it now, that is pretty cool.”

Mader said she was honored to receive the pitcher of the year honors.

“I think it is really good,” she said. “It shows the hard work has paid off.”

Her scoreless innings streak began against Osawatomie, covering the last two innings of a 14-1 victory in which she struck out nine.

Mader then threw the no-hitter against De Soto in her next start. She followed up that performance with a one-hit, 10-0 shutout against Anderson County.

She threw a seven-hit shutout against Spring Hill.

St. James snapped the streak in the first game of a doubleheader, but Mader still notched a 6-2 victory and recorded a season-high 17 strikeouts in the contest.

Mader’s first loss of the season came in her next start, a 2-1 loss to Baldwin on the road in extra innings.

She threw six scoreless innings before Baldwin tied the game with an unearned run in the seventh inning and won it in the bottom of the eight with another unearned run.

Mader suffered a 5-4 loss against Ottawa, which won its Class 4A regional to advance to state. Playing in the same substate last season, Mader defeated Ottawa to send the Panthers to its second straight state tournament.

Her final loss was a 2-1 game against Iola in the regional championship game.

Defensively, Mader was just as solid with 135 put outs and 15 assists. She made just two errors in 152 chances for a .980 fielding percentage.

Mader helped herself at the plate with 21 hits in 77 at bats with seven doubles and a home run. She drove home 18 runs with 14 runs scored.
