Given the adage “good pitching beats good hitting,” the Tri-County Spotlight softball team would be a tough one to beat.

The team features not one, two or even three, but four aces.

Kylee Mader of Paola, a first-team selection, heads the list with an 8-3 record and an earned-run average of 0.70.

Karly Schulte of Central Heights, a first-team selection at shortstop and second-team pitcher, takes to the mound with a 10-3 record and an earned run average of 1.07.

Throw into that mix Hannah Behm of Prairie View (12 wins) and Allison Wood of Paola (seven wins) and the all-stars would hold their own.

Mader threw five shutouts, including four consecutive during a 31-inning scoreless streak. She also pitched a no-hitter.

While the pitching is strong, the Tri-County Spotlight team also packs its share of hitters and defensive standouts.

Six players on the first team hit .370 or higher with four topping the .400 mark.

Schulte hit .483 to lead the spotlight team. She had 28 base hits with seven doubles, five triples, one home run and 14 runs batted in. Schulte stole 14 bases.

Janzen Maring of Osawatomie, a first-team player at utility, batted .414 for the Trojans.

Kayla Offutt, a first-team selection at outfield, hit .438 for the Paola Panthers.

Offutt was a table setter. She got on base and scored. Offutt led the Panthers with 38 runs scored on the season. She had 39 base hits in 89 at bats with six doubles and two triples.

In addition to her 38 runs scored, Offutt drove home 13 runs. She had an on-base percentage of .551 and stole 18 bases in 18 attempts.

Genna Stambaugh, an outfielder for the Louisburg Wildcats, hit .408 with 27 hits. She had seven doubles, five triples, a home run and 19 runs batted in.

Teammate Izzy Hastings, a first-team third baseman, batted .397 with 23 hits. She had two doubles, stole five bases and drove home nine runs.

Laura Geiger, who played outfield for Osawatomie, hit .370.

Offutt and Stambaugh chased down a lot of balls in the outfield and did not miss hauling down much. Offutt made just two errors in 28 chances for a .929 fielding percentage. Stambaugh had a .939 fielding percentage, committing only two errors the entire season.

Wood, a first-team selection at first base, fielded 110 chances and made two errors for a .982 fielding percentage.

Mader fielded her position on the mound, making just three errors in 153 chances for a .980 fielding percentage.

Other first-team selections were Megan Oestricher of Central Heights, second base; and Kenzy Sisson of Jayhawk-Linn, catcher.

The Tri-County Spotlight softball team was selected by a vote of Miami County Newspapers sports editors Andy Brown, Louisburg Herald; David Wolman, Osawatomie Graphic; and Gene Morris, Miami County Republic.
