School may be out, but that doesn’t mean athletics is slowing down any. Several of the athletic programs will be holding camps this month into July, and with the new open-practice rule sent down by the Kansas State High School Activities Association earlier this year, athletes will be busier than ever. With the new rule coaches have more flexibility to work with athletes throughout the summer than the association had allowed in the past. Football coach Michael Dumpert and volleyball coach Michelle Abshire had week-long camps for athletes this week. It is never too early to start thinking about Paola Panther basketball. Summer sessions, a new approach for the Paola girls’ basketball camps, has already started its weekly Thursday camps. The Paola boys’ week-long basketball camp opens June 15. Summer basketball camp for the Paola High School girls is no longer a week-long commitment, but one for the summer. Panther coach Stuart Ross is switching from the traditional week-long basketball camps in favor of offering camp sessions every Thursday. “This year I have changed the format of our summer camps,” Ross said. “Instead of a one-week camp, we are holding workout sessions on Thursdays. These sessions will be basically the same drills and fundamental work that we did in camp, but by doing it once a week, we hope that kids work on these skills during the following week and actually have better skill retention.” Sessions began Thursday. Seventh- and eighth-grade sessions are from 9 to 10 a.m. Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders will have sessions every Thursday from 10 to 11:15 a.m. By changing the format to once a week and offering reduced costs, Ross said the program is hoping it can reach more girls this summer. Basketball coaches will get to meet with the kids more often through the new format and see how they are doing from week-to-week, Ross said. “By going once a week during the summer, we will have more days of contact than a normal camp,” he said. “Moreover, because of a full summer of activities, students have commitments one week that could usually exclude them from camp. Now students can miss a week or two and still be able to participate in our camps.” Paola Panther boys’ basketball camps are scheduled for June 15 to 18. Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade boys will have camp from 1:30 to 3 p.m. June 15 through June 18. Paola High School and Paola Middle School coaches as well as former Paola Panther players will be conducting the camp. Middle school boys’ camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon June 15 to 18. High school players will have camp from 8 to 10 a.m. All players must have physicals on file with the school offices. Physicals from the 2008-09 school year are sufficient. Boys’ and girls’ basketball camps will be held in the Paola High School gymnasium.
