Hillsdale residents might be relieved to learn that Miami County is moving forward to remedy a longtime problem in their community.

Miami County Codes Officer Mike Davis received approval at Wednesday’s Miami County Commission meeting for a July 8 public meeting to determine if an unoccupied building at 316 N. Central St. in Hillsdale is unsafe.

Records show it was built in 1950, but Davis said that’s questionable. There is no electric or gas service to the building, and part of the floor is collapsing, he told commissioners. His report said deteriorated exterior walls, missing siding and missing roofing materials let weather in and violate Miami County codes.

Owner John Patti of Chicago would like to repair the building, Davis said Patti’s daughter told him, and he said the county would do nothing to prevent that.

“However, it would put them on notice that if they didn’t repair it in a timely manner, the county could then exercise its right to step in and demolish,” Davis said.

In other business, the Miami County Commission approved:

Declaring two unlicensed and improperly stored pickup trucks, owned by county residents Nathan and Dana Blume, a nuisance. The vote was 4-1 in favor, with the dissenting vote cast by Commissioner Rob Roberts.

Resubmission of an amended Sixth Judicial District Community Services grant application for prevention, intervention and graduated sanctions services, and authorizing Commission Chairman Jim Wise to sign the application.

Authorization of the chairman to sign a quit claim deed conveying the county’s interest in the right-of-way for the former Hedge Lane Road to the city of Paola before closing it for construction of the Baptiste Drive extension from closed Hedge Lane Road to 311th Street.

Appointment of Stephanie Jo O’Dell as Miami County appraiser for a four-year term.

Transfer of Osage Cemetery District No. 4 assets to the district’s board.

Authorization of the chairman to sign documents required for a partnership with the Southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission and East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. to implement the Neighborhood Stabilization Program for purchase and redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes. Miami County received $441,852 in federal funding for the program, and $4,930 was added to that amount last week.

Appointment of Mark Oehlert, Fred Miller and Dennis Cranor to the board of Miami County Fire District No. 1.

Declaration of May 17-23 as Emergency Medical Services Week.

The building was orginally a church dated 1903 (?) it was remodeled in 1950! Sadly another piece of Hillsdale will probably be taken down due to lack of care on owners part. What a shame to see another piece of history just gone.
