It appeared Jayhawk-Linn was well on its way to earning a split of Tuesday’s softball doubleheader with Central Heights, as the Jayhawks led 5-0 after three innings in game two. Jayhawk-Linn freshman pitcher Tess Murrow, who had been able to work out of several jams during the afternoon, including a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the first inning of game two, had to come through one final time. And she did, inducing a ground-out to end the game as the Jayhawks held on for a 5-4 victory, giving coach Josh Regan his first victory as Jayhawk-Linn coach. Jayhawk-Linn’s offense gave Murrow a cushion to work with before Central Heights stepped to the plate. She even helped her own cause at the plate, as she and Jessie McGown led off the first with back-to-back singles. Both eventually came around to score on a one-out double by Kenzie Sisson. Sisson scored on an error for a 3-0 lead. Brooke Wheeler scored on a Megan Deer RBI ground-out in the second for a 4-0 lead. Sara Pollard scored on a single by Sara Rowe in the third for a 5-0 lead. Central Heights (3-1) made things interesting late. Karly Schulte led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on a long double by Megan Oestricher to cut the deficit to 5-1. Central Heights scored three times in the sixth, including doubles by Oestricher and Schulte. Schulte scored on an error to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Vikings couldn’t get any closer. Schulte and Murrow were involved in a pitcher’s dual in game one, as both combined for 17 strikeouts and two hits. But Schulte received just a little more support from her offense, as Central Heights took game one, 3-1. Jayhawk-Linn took advantage of two Central Heights errors in the first for a 1-0 lead. Schulte didn’t let that affect her, as the sophomore hurler at one point retired 17 straight batters. Her bid for a no-hitter was ended in the seventh when Deer blooped a single. Murrow was also in a groove, as she at one point struck out seven straight batters. Schulte also helped to wake up a dormant Viking offense. She launched a double in the fourth and came around to score on an error. Central Heights added two runs on four hits in the sixth for the final tally.
