It’s been a while since the Central Heights softball team swept a doubleheader from Osawatomie, let alone win one game against the Trojans.

“This is my third year here, and we’ve never even beaten them,” Central Heights coach Lynn Percy said.
That changed Tuesday.

Karly Schulte allowed only one run and five hits in a 3-1 victory in game one for the Lady Vikings.

Central Heights’ offense provided Schulte with an early 2-0 cushion, thanks in part to two errors committed by the Trojans in the first inning.

Samantha Hayward extended the lead to 3-0 with a single in the second. Another error by the Trojans, who committed seven in the doubleheader, nearly led to a fourth run for the Vikings, but catcher Jordan Nichols tagged out the Viking base runner attempting to score from second base.

Osawatomie coach Ron Maring contributed the errors to first-game jitters.

“We were showing a lot of jitters before the game,” he said.

Brittney Booe rolled a single into right field in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Osawatomie had a chance to threaten for more, with runners on second and third bases with two outs, but Schulte induced a fly ball to end the inning.

Alissa Drake, who was pitching in her first career varsity game, did her part to keep the Trojans (0-2) within striking distance. She allowed at least one runner to reach base the final four innings but didn’t allow another run to cross the plate.

“Alissa threw real well for her first varsity game,” Maring said. “We just have to work on cutting down the walks.”

Bats came alive for both teams in game two.

Osawatomie took leads of 2-0 and 6-4, but Central Heights had an answer both times, and the Lady Vikings went on to take the nightcap 8-6 to sweep the doubleheader.

Singles by Drake, Booe and Geiger and a double by freshman Brittney Whitley in the fourth gave the Trojans a 6-4 lead.

Geiger and Drake each had three hits in the doubleheader for Osawatomie. Whitley and Kylee Needham each had two hits.

“I thought we hit the ball hard a lot of times, but they (Central Heights) made great plays,” Maring said.

In a game in which the Lady Vikings started four freshmen, Joy Savage got a three-run rally in the fourth started with a walk.

Central Heights took advantage of two Osawatomie errors in the sixth for an 8-6 lead.

“I thought we would go in and at least get a split with Central Heights,” Maring said. “They’ve improved a lot. I’m surprised to be 0-2, but it’s early in the season.”
