Randall Keith Nelson, 61, of Richmond, formerly of Iola, died April 7, 2009, at his home.

He was born Jan. 3, 1948, in Iola, the son of Carl A. and Wanda M. Alumbaugh Nelson. He grew up in Iola and attended Iola High School.

On Sept. 16, 1967, he married Virginia L. “Ginny” Potter in Iola. He served three years with the U.S. Army stationed in Vietnam then in Columbus, Ga., his last year. He was a helicopter crew chief and helicopter mechanic. Following his honorable discharge from the service, they moved from Georgia to Lamar, Mo., LaHarpe, Kan., Lyndon, Kan., and settled in Louisburg for 15 years. They later moved to Paola before moving to their country home in Richmond four years ago.

He worked for his uncle, Howard Nelson, at Nelson Quarries, Reno Construction and J.A. Tobin Construction before operating his own heavy equipment repair business, R.K. Nelson Field Service Inc. His business worked exclusively with Nelson Quarries the past nine years.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Osawatomie. He enjoyed being outdoors feeding the birds, geese, fish and deer. He loved working with trees and caring for the land. He landscaped and built all the roads and ponds at their home to create a park-like setting. He especially loved playing with his grandson and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife, Ginny Nelson of the home; two sons, Steven Ray Nelson of Olathe and Michael Aaron Nelson of Paola; one grandson; his mother, Wanda Nelson of Lamar; five brothers, Jerry Nelson of Lamar, Bob Nelson of Joplin, Bruce Nelson of Quapaw, Okla., Paul “Dusty” Nelson of Jasper, Mo., Jim Nelson of Baxter Springs, Kan.; and two sisters, Carol Harman of Ocala, Fla., and Mary Nelson of Lamar.

He was preceded in death by his father and an infant sister.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel, 16 N. Buckeye St., Iola, KS 66749, (620) 365-2948. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Iola. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Iola with military honors.
