WELLSVILLE — The cold, windy weather didn’t seem to bother the Paola boys’ track team too much during Tuesday’s Snowball Relays in Wellsville. Paola ran away with the team title with a whopping 138.5 pounds, which was 48 points ahead of second place Louisburg. Osawatomie finished third overall with 85 points. “I thought it was a typical start to a season, weather and performance wise,” Paola coach Mike Smith said. “I saw lots of things to improve upon and also a lot of things we can build upon. Upperclassmen really led both teams with nice efforts. Overall, it was a solid team performance.” Although the team fared well, it was Luke Wilson and Joe Stephens who struck gold for Paola. Wilson finished first in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 8 inches and took home the top spot in the shot put by more than seven feet with a toss of 51-10.5. Stephens did his damage on both the track and the field. Stephens won the triple jump with a leap of 42-1 and later took care of business in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time 15.5 seconds to grab his second gold of the day. Paola senior Antonio Smith also helped the Panthers as he nipped Wellsville’s Austin Moore at the finish line in the 100-meter dash in 10.9 seconds. Despite Wilson’s and Stephens’ efforts, Osawatomie’s Brendan Soucie might have stolen the show. Soucie took gold in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 10.3 seconds and helped two relay teams to first place finishes. Soucie, along with Derrick Kueser, Dustin Kueser and Trevor Cooley, won both the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. The 4x400 team won in 3:39.70 and the 4x800 squad breezed to another gold in 8:39.20. Louisburg senior Michael Kircher brought home the lone gold medal for the Wildcats with a first-place finish in the pole vault. Kircher cleared 11 feet in the event to earn the top spot. Central Heights’ Austin Davis also was among area athletes to take first. Davis recorded a throw of 159-9 to win the javelin.
