Anyone wanting to take a trip to Italy on Sunday can stop by Holy Trinity Catholic School and support Russell Field in the process. Local chef Michael Hursey will be making pasta Italian lunch to benefit the lighting project at Russell Field. Salad and pasta will be prepared by Hursey. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dessert and drinks will also be provided. The pasta is all you can eat. Walmart Supercenter, where Hursey is manager, is sponsoring the event to benefit Russell Field. Russell Field is home to the Paola American Legion baseball team, the Paola Babe Ruth League and the Paola High School Panther baseball team. Proceeds from the Italian lunch will benefit a lighting project at the field, which comes with a price tag of $40,000. Russell Field has been a busy place this off-season with the infield leveled and replaced through a Kansas City Royals baseball $5,000 matching grant. Fence from the third and first base lines to the outfield have been replaced this summer with a lot of work done by Panther coach Paul Brack and other volunteers. During the baseball renovation process, Legion officials found many of the old lights were not in working order and bulbs could not simply be replaced. Paola American Legion baseball Chairman Jeff Johnson began a fund-raising effort to solicit funds from the community and grants to help pay for the new lights. The Jewell Roman Foundation, the city of Paola, Paola High School and Kansas City Power & Light have donated money and labor to assist the American Legion in making the Russell Field lighting project a reality, Johnson said.
