Purple martins are smart this year. None had been reported in the area as of Monday. However, Leland and Slina Prothe were preparing their martin houses for occupancy Monday.

“I went online,” Slina said, “and the purple martin were reported Friday in mid-state Kansas. They should be here before long.”

Purple martin house keepers please keep me advised as to the arrival of scouts and how your broods are during this summer.

Crappie were hitting “pretty good” Monday at the Jayhawk Marina on Hillsdale Lake, but walleye and largemouth bass were very slow. As the water becomes warmer, Rick Phillips, Jayhawk Marina manager, expects the walleye and largemouth bass to hit better.

“The water was stained from the wind and rain last week,” Phillips said, “and that slowed fish activity. But they are catching quite a few keeper crappie today.”

If you are planning a hunting or fishing outing in Missouri, you might want to check your permits. The Missouri hunting and fishing permit year ended the last day of February. New permits were required March 1.

The Missouri Conservation Department switched its yearly licensing dates in 1996 because hunting seasons for some game, such as rabbits, squirrels, quail, pheasants, ruffed grouse and certain waterfowl, extended into the new year. The requirement for new permits March 1 also coincides with the start of the regular fishing season at Missouri’s four trout parks.

Beginning in 2010, participants in the light-goose conservation order in Missouri must purchase a resident or nonresident Conservation Order Permit if they are 16 or older.

For other hunting and fishing information go to www.mdc.mo.gov/regs/permits.htm.
