HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nervousness accompanied Jayhawk-Linn’s first appearance in the girls’ state basketball tournament since 1993.
Even coach Charlie Beckman did his best to get the nerves out of his players’ system.

Between the first and second quarters, he could be seen standing up in the huddle, pushing his arms to the ground, signaling it was time for them to get rid of the nerves.

Nothing seemed to work as 30 turnovers doomed Jayhawk-Linn in a season-ending 56-37 loss to Cherryvale at the Class 3A state tournament Wednesday night at Hutchinson Sports Arena.

After trailing 20-5 after the first quarter, Jayhawk-Linn went on a 10-3 run to start the second and get to within eight points.

That’s as close as the Jayhawks would get as Cherryvale closed out the first half with a big surge, gaining a 34-19 halftime lead.

Cassie Rockers scored 21 points in her final game as a Jayhawk.

Jayhawk-Linn finished the season 18-6.
