The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration was wise to put a new National Weather Service tower in Linn County. The tower completed a 30-day test period in mid-February and was operational in time for the county’s first, and hopefully last, tornado of the season. A tornado touched down near Sugar Valley Lake late Monday night and traveled across the county to a point east of Pleasanton.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the tornado. But some residents experienced damage to outbuildings and trees on their property.

Linn County is known for tornado activity, according to NWS officials, which is why the county selected as an ideal spot for the tower.

Residents should take advantage of Midland Radio’s Alert radios designed specifically for NOAA all-hazard alerts. Homeland Security purchased 25,000 radios from NOAA for all Kansas and Missouri schools.

Spring Break

College and high school students preparing to leave town for spring break need to be safe and think before they partake in too much merriment. The Christian rock concert Sunday night in Louisburg for Miami County teens will kick off the break on a good note.
