Officials from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are investigating a suspicious death after a body was found in a burned vehicle near Richmond on Wednesday night.

According to a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office news release, a report of a vehicle fire in the 300 block of Eisenhower Road about two miles west of Richmond came in at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday night.

Richmond Township Fire Department and sheriff’s officers were dispatched to the scene and discovered a small grass fire and a totally burned vehicle in the west ditch. Fire department officials put out the grass fire while officers checked the vehicle and discovered the body.

There is not yet enough information to identify the body, or even to determine the sex or age, according to the release. The body will be sent to Frontier Forensics in Topeka for an autopsy.

The sheriff’s office is being assisted by investigators from the Ottawa Fire Department, Kansas State Fire Marshall’s Office and an agent from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Investigators have not found any reports of missing or overdue motorists from nearby counties, according to the release.
