King Construction of Hesston was selected Tuesday as contractor for the Bull Creek bridge redecking and rehabilitation project, having submitted the low bid of $1,731,741.70.

Miami County Engineer Penny Evans announced the contract award during the Wednesday County Commission meeting, and the Kansas Department of Transportation’s letter notifying the county of its matching funds obligation to obtain federal funding for the project.

“KDOT has asked us to acknowledge the authority to award (the) contract and make a commitment of county funds,” she said. “They’re requesting us to put on account $731,000 before April 22, 2009. I have conferred with administration and the (county) clerk’s office to make sure that there are adequate funds to meet that obligation, and they assure us that there will be by that April 22nd date.”

Evans said the contractor is currently working on another job north of Kansas City and expects to begin work on the Bull Creek bridge project in mid-May.

“This project is expected to take a year, as far as the contracted time that they have to do it,” she said.

Miami County Economic Development Director Janet McRae and other county staff are organizing a project open house to take place from 5-7 p.m. April 16 in the Commission Chambers at 201 S. Pearl St. in Paola.

“That will be for project information, the detour route, what the project consists of, and maybe why we’re doing the project,” Evans said. “The designer will be here for that.”

She said McRae is currently working on a data base to identify who is located within the project limits or along the detour route, so they can be notified of the project’s impact. A detour route map will be published as soon as it becomes available. A Web page will be created as well, Evans said, to provide individuals with project information and the name and telephone number of the inspector to contact if they have immediate concerns.

Earlier, during the morning study session, the commissioners discussed with Evans the need for directional signs to ensure that south Paola businesses’ customers will know alternate ways to access those businesses.

Having discussed the matter fully, the commissioners voted unanimously to accept authority of the contract award and the commitment of county funds as its matching obligation for federal funding of the project.
