It’s a 24-mile drive from Osawatomie to Garnett. But seeing his team trail Anderson County 23-7 at halftime of Tuesday’s game, Osawatomie girls’ basketball coach Don Blanchat felt like his team was doing more sightseeing than playing a basketball game.

“It looked like we took a vacation and wanted to walk through it,” he said.

Osawatomie roared back, getting to within five points on free throws by Rachel Fisher and Kortney Bailey in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too much to overcome as Anderson County sent the Trojans to a 40-30 loss.

Anderson County was the aggressor at the onset, grabbing rebound after rebound, forcing turnovers and rarely letting Osawatomie get into its offensive sets.

Yet, the Trojans still found themselves only down by three, 9-6, after the first quarter.

Turnovers, however, started to catch up to Osawatomie (6-13 overall, 3-6 Pioneer League) in the second quarter.

“I asked coach (Clint) Bailey early in the second quarter, I think with six and a half minutes left, and we already had 11 turnovers,” Blanchat said. “It seemed like every other possession we had a turnover or we had a rushed shot.”

Brittney Booe hit a runner in the paint to cut Anderson County’s lead to 4-2, but it was the only field goal in the first half for the Trojans.

Rebecca Fisher made a free throw with one minute remaining in the first half to prevent Osawatomie from being shut out in the second quarter.

She scored nine points to lead Osawatomie. Booe added seven points and Haley Madden and Kortney Bailey six each.
Blanchat delivered a strong message to his team at halftime, and that seemed to be the wake-up call the Trojans needed.

“I was just trying to tell them when we came out in the first half we weren’t ready,” he said. “We just got beat. We got flat-out beat. We didn’t look as competitive as Anderson County. I made it a point to bring that to their attention, and they responded well in the third quarter.”

Post players drove hard to the basket for scoring opportunities or free throws. Osawatomie went to the foul line eight times in the third quarter.

Anderson County was limited to a Megan Hilliard 3-pointer in the quarter.

Free throws by Bailey and Rachel Fisher twice brought Osawatomie to within five points of the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, but Anderson County closed the game on a 10-5 run.

“We are already in a 16-point hole so were expending so much energy trying to get those stops and catching up,” Blanchat said.
