Jayhawks, Vikings head to Burlington

The event Central Heights and Jayhawk-Linn wrestlers have worked hard to prepare for all season is finally here — the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament.
Both the Vikings and Jayhawks will make the trek south today to Burlington to compete in the two-day tournament.

Jayhawk-Linn’s Alan Johnson (215 pounds) and Caleb Jackson (285) will both look to qualify for state for the second time. Johnson qualified last season, while Jackson did so in 2007 — the inaugural season for the Jayhawk wrestling program.

Both have put together solid resumes this season.

Johnson enters at 25-4. He has placed in the top five at five events, including winning individual titles at Tonganoxie and KC-Piper.

After missing time due to an injury, Jackson returns to the place where he won his first career medal two years ago. He won the individual title at 285 at the Burlington tournament Jan. 10, and will again look to stand on top of the podium.

Quincy Hodges (160) and Jared Avery (145) have each placed at two tournaments this season. David Troth (135) and Trevor Laporte (125) will also look to make their first career appearance at state (Feb. 27-28 in Hays, Kan.).

Central Heights junior J.D. Johnson (152) missed qualifying for state by just one match last season, but he brings a solid 25-11 record to the regional tournament. He’s placed at five of seven tournaments, including first at Pleasant Ridge.

David Green (285) and Justin Ennis (125) will also look to punch their tickets to Hays.

After missing the first two and a half months of the season to rehab an injury he suffered during football, Gage Holler, a freshman, will look to qualify at 145.

A shoulder injury will prevent Chad Platt (160) from competing.
