Even playing one of its better games of the season, it still wasn’t enough for the Louisburg boys’ basketball team to leave De Soto with a win.

Despite scoring 29 points in the second quarter, the Wildcats could not solve the De Soto zone defense in the third quarter and eventually that led to a 68-62 loss. Both teams went back and forth in the final quarter, but De Soto made the shots when it counted.

“Our team played one of their better games of the year,” Louisburg coach Jim Dillon said. “The effort was tremendous and we did a lot of nice things. De Soto played a zone in the third quarter and that slowed us down. However, our guys kept battling and we had an opportunity at the end of the game.

“I have to give De Soto credit, they made a lot of big shots and answered any run that we made.”

Down 13-11 in the second quarter, Louisburg outscored De Soto 29-20 in the second and took a 40-33 lead at halftime. De Soto outscored the Wildcats 12-4 in the third to keep the game close.

Shots were falling often in the fourth, but Louisburg couldn’t hold on in the six-point loss. The Wildcats are  7-6 overall and are still winless in the Frontier League with an 0-4 mark.

Sophomore Kody Cook and senior Drew Kershner were big from the outside, as each scored 14 points and hit a combined seven 3-pointers. Senior Kyle Nauman was also in double figures with 11.

“We are a very young team and losing is never fun for anyone involved,” Dillon said. “However, we are going to focus on improvement, playing hard and playing as a team. I believe that we are playing better each game and showing improvement, and by the end of the year we will be a team that has been tested.

“Our schedule is not going to let us cruise to postseason. We will have to play well to be in games. Each game our guys are gaining more experience.”

The Wildcats will try for that first league win tonight when they travel to Eudora. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
