Area residents will have the opportunity to take an active role in their local and state governments, starting Saturday, when the annual Legislative Breakfast series kicks off at 7 a.m. in the Louisburg High School commons area. Local legislators have been invited to talk about the issues shaping this year’s legislative session. Miami County Newspapers’ online poll question this week indicates residents are most interested in hearing legislators talk about the state budget, education and health care. The series will continue in Paola Feb. 14, Osawatomie Feb. 21, and conclude in Spring Hill March 7. Paola USD 368 School Board members likely will face a packed house Monday, when they are scheduled to make a decision on the first round of proposed budget cuts. The suggested cuts are likely to include the elimination of parochial students from participating in activities at Paola Middle School, as well as a list of fee increases and other items. Staff at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Paola have already begun to fight the proposal, and many of them, along with parents, are expected to attend Monday’s meeting. Attend the breakfast series and school board and city council meetings. All government entities — cities, school districts, counties and the state — face tough budget decisions ahead.

I encourage all Miami County residents to attend one of these forums. It gives you a chance to ask questions and hear what your local representatives are doing for you.
It give you a chance to discuss your concerns and ideas with the State's lawmakers. Not to mention the wonderful breakfast that is served. What better way to spend an early Saturday morning. 1
