About 47 members of Miami County boards and commissions met Tuesday night for some barbecue and a bit of prestidigitation.

They came together at K&M Bar-B-Q Restaurant in Spring Hill to enjoy a casual buffet dinner organized by county staff to thank them for their service.

“We appreciate your dedication, your willingness to serve and help the staff make good decisions for Miami County, and I truly mean that,” Miami County Planning Director Charlene Weiss said.

Magician Scott Henderson entertained the honorees with card tricks and other illusions. One of County Commission Chairman Jim Wise’s favorites was an illusion in which Henderson magically refilled and resealed a dented, half-empty can of soda.

“I could figure out how some of the other tricks could be done, but I couldn’t see how he did the can of pop trick,” Wise said. “To do that, he’s got to be pretty good.”

Commissioner George Pretz later said the dinner is an annual event conducted at a different restaurant in a different Miami County community each year.

Pretz also said while the event doesn’t compensate the board members for the time and effort they contribute, it is a token of gratitude they deserve.

“The people on these boards serve all of you on a volunteer basis. They’re not paid for what they do, so it’s important to show them some appreciation,” Pretz said.

Miami County goes to a Johnson County restuarant to celebrate? We B' Smokin is an excellent restuarant to hold such an event. Located in Miami County in a facility owned by Miami County. I guess I'm confused? Would anyone care to explain?
