Miami County businesses needing some summer help but worried about paying for it may be able to get assistance from a summer employment program organized by Kansas Works.

Thanks to the federal Workforce Investment Act, Kansas Works can pay the salaries of eligible youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who are interested in working for local businesses during the summer months.

Businesses first must sign up to participate in the program and be willing to keep accurate time sheets, track progress and communicate with Kansas Works about any issues.

Travis Allen, Kansas Works business relations manager, said he is currently in the process of gathering a list of interested employers, which can include county and city governments. He said the program is a partnership between Kansas Works and employers willing to teach occupational skills and a good work ethic.

Youth interested in learning more about the program may contact the Kansas Works Pittsburg office at (620) 231-4250. Businesses interested in signing up may contact Allen at (620) 232-7490.
