A group of Miami County residents are planning to create a local cancer foundation that could provide services and support to local patients and their families. Cathy Leaver of American Family Insurance in Paola said the group is seeking volunteers to help form the Miami County Cancer Foundation. Leaver lost her son, Shawn Courtney, to lymphoma cancer in 1999. Leaver said the volunteers hope the foundation will be able to provide all types of assistance, from gas and food cards to medical equipment. Anyone interested in learning more about the new group is invited to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Leaver’s office, 210 N. Hospital Drive. “I hope it’s standing room only,” Leaver said.
