Three farm operations were recognized at the 63rd annual Miami County Conservation meeting and banquet Monday at the Miami County Fairgrounds.

Receiving the Bankers Award for soil and water conservation were Brad and Lila Carter. Chad Oehlert, Miami County Key Banker from the Citizens State Bank, made the presentation. Warren and Mary Medlin received the Grassland Award, sponsored by the Miami County Conservation District, from Jerry Eggleston. Jim Player received the Buffer Award, sponsored by Feyh Farms and presented by his neighbor, Jim Meinig, on behalf of Richard Feyh.

A special award was presented to Bob Allen, Miami County Natural Resources Conservation Service technician, for outstanding support and service to Miami County landowners and operators. Jenny Jasper, Miami County Conservation District manager, made the presentation.

Harrison McCallop, chairman of the conservation district board of supervisors, was master of ceremonies. He welcomed the approximately 125 attending and made several introductions. Marvin Clark offered the invocation.

Special slides were shown by Jasper on award recipients and their involvement with soil and water conservation.

A program reviewing some of the education tools employed to get the conservation message to youths and the general public was conducted by Jasper, Cheri Miller, Wyandotte County Conservation District manager, and Debra Sumner, Natural Resources and Conservation Service conservationist. They demonstrated “soil treasure hunts” providing “treasures” hidden in containers of soil. The hunt was to find the different treasures in the containers. Mark Peters, of the conservation district, and Allen also assisted in presenting educational programs.

Herschel George, Kansas State University Extension watershed specialist, provided a water quality control display and explained how conservation methods help provide clean water.

McCallop and John Vickers were re-elected to the conservation district board of supervisors during the annual election conducted by George. Neither was opposed. Other board members are Ken Nelson, Jim Meinig and Jerry Eggleston.
