Miami County will be without an Extension agriculture agent Tuesday when Mark Flory leaves to pursue another Extension Service position in Douglas County. Flory has been employed as the Douglas County 4-H and Youth Development agent. It is with some regret he leaves the area, Flory said, but he has always been interested in youth programs and working with youths, and this opportunity puts him “at home” where he can assist his father and mother in their hog operation. A May 2007 graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in animal science, the Miami County agriculture and natural resources agent was Flory’s first job with Kansas State University Extension and Research. Flory and Sarah Bagwell were married 2007 Memorial Day weekend. They had been dating since they were freshmen in high school. She is a registered nurse. They have been making their home north of Paola but will be moving back to the Lawrence area when housing is available. Flory is a “farm boy,” having grown up on a livestock farm near Lawrence. He participated in 4-H beginning as a 7-year-old, so he knows the value of Extension Service. He graduated from Lawrence High School, attended Fort Scott Community College two years and then entered K-State. He has a couple of brothers in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning business who did not follow the agriculture trade. Flory’s parents, Roger and Teresa Gentry Flory, still operate the family livestock business near Lawrence. Members of the Miami County Extension Council are hoping to get another agriculture agent, but there is a freeze on hiring. No one outside of those now working in Extension Service can apply for the Miami County opening, said Dianne Burnett, Miami County Extension director. A job opening has been posted on the K-State Extension network. Screening of applications begins Feb. 9 and will continue until the position is filled. This position is available on or after May 3. The starting date is negotiable. After the K-State Extension service selects applications, if any, the applications will be forwarded to the Miami County Extension Council Executive Committee composed of Julie Renberg, chairman; Allen McKoon, vice chairman; Rita McKoon, treasurer; Darren Green, secretary; and Leland Prothe, Brad Carter, Lorna McCrea, Ann Detwiler and Merle Kaiser, board members.
