The construction budget for the joint water project being tackled by Paola and Louisburg appears to not be as tight as officials thought earlier this month. The two cities have been working on a multi-million-dollar water project for more than a year, and members of the Marais des Cygnes Public Utility Authority have been targeting a July 4 date to get the new water plant southeast of Paola operational and treating water. Earlier this month, Paola City Clerk Dan Droste announced the construction fund could be looking at a near $88,000 shortage because interest from the money in the account was being funneled elsewhere. But at Wednesday’s quarterly meeting of the PUA board, Droste said there was a misunderstanding, and the interest earned would remain in the construction account, leaving only about a $9,000 shortfall, which officials said could be made up in other areas. There also was continued talk about how the PUA would be able to sell water to Miami County Rural Water District No. 2 once the plant goes online. Much of the PUA’s lines are placed in RWD No. 2 territory, some even going through the yards of the rural water district’s customers. PUA officials have been waiting for RWD No. 2 officials to review a wholesale water agreement between the two entities, and Paola City Manager Jay Wieland said Wednesday water district officials appear to have another proposal they plan to submit to the PUA board. Paola already has an interconnect agreement with RWD No. 2, which allows the city to purchase water to fill its new tower. Paola and Louisburg are both planning to use their existing plants to pump water through the recently-installed 17 miles of pipeline to test the lines before the plant is operational.
