The championship dual between Prairie View and Chanute at the 2008 Prairie View Invitational was a moment Walter Vandeventer lives for as a wrestling coach. “The dual with Chanute last year was awesome,” the Prairie View coach said. Plenty of cheering and encouragement came from the Prairie View sideline. “I had never seen some of my kids so jazzed before,” Vandeventer said. “The Chanute coach and I were both impressed with our teams and how they got into the dual. As a coach, moments like that are what you coach for.” Chanute won six of the dual’s first seven matches for a 23-6 lead. A chance at winning its home tournament, at the time, appeared to be bleak for the Buffalos, but they roared back. Five straight pins by the Buffalos gave them a 36-23 lead with only matches at 215 and 275 pounds to go. Chanute won the final two matches, but six pins by Prairie View proved to be the difference in its 36-29 win. Vandeventer believes the tournament, now in its 34th year, will again offer a competitive field. The tournament sports two state-ranked teams in Chanute (No. 6 in Class 4A) and Olathe East (No. 8 in 6A). Other teams taking the mat Saturday morning with the home Prairie View squad are Osawatomie, Anderson County, Andover, Chanute, Coffeyville, Olathe East, Ottawa and Shawnee Mission South. “I think there are four or five teams that could win our tournament this weekend, and I believe we are one of them,” Vandeventer said. “Coach (Mike) Atlee from Wichita South said his team is very solid,” Vandeventer said. “Chanute has a very good team as well as Osawatomie and Olathe East.” Prairie View’s Bo Newport (112 pounds), Bronson Moylan (135), Quinton Ford (145) and Nathan Sommer (152) each have at least 20 wins on the season. Osawatomie’s Zack Grimes (171), Bohdi Wallace (103), Montana Dunn (130), William Wilson (160), Brant Johnson (140), Dakota Hunke (145) and Chance Sinclair (152) each have recorded at least 10 wins. The Trojans have competed in two fewer events than the Buffalos this season. Osawatomie placed fifth at Prairie View last season, and is keen on finishing higher in the team standings. “The tournament field is tough,” said Osawatomie coach Jason Bloodgood. “It will be a long and exciting day.”
